Tho spelling match last Thursday

Tom Allen, colored, aud Emma
Burgess, white, wero deposited iu jail

says he has known Emum less than a

oblnined the license fur them, and
that he marriod Emma because he
loved her and not for her color,
talks vory saucily about it. Says he
worked for Mr. J. O. Waddell two

tells a gloomy story. Says her father
stole her from her mother when small
and brought her in his arms to Ala

who was destitute, and has taken uo
caro of her since, but drinks,

This we don’t believe. She is twenty
years old, and says a Mr. Sharp, of
Cross Plains, now deceased, was the
father of her child. Says she would
not marriod Tom had sho not loved
him. Again she stated that sho didn’t
know why she married him We
don’t believe they were ever married.
They came up on tho train from Ala
