Our usually quiet town was thrown
intr considerable excitement by tho
killing of John McCormick by marshol
Wilkes aud Wm. Meeks, on last .Sun
day evening, about 7 o'clock.
From the testimony at tho inquest
which was held on Monday, wo get
tho following facts : A wurrant
issued bv Judgo Sparks for tho arrest
of McCormick, for assault and batte
ry, and placed in tho hands of bailiff
Price, who executed tho wurrant, but
somehow made bis escape. He then
j went to Judge Sparks for advice iu

told him to "shoot and bo d—d.”
McCormick thou went further into tho

Mr. Crane's wife was, followed by
Wilkes, with drawn pistol. About
this time, according to Crano’s testi

with drawn pistol, and said, "stand

About this time Mr. Crane got out of
the house with his wifo, in the back

Tho following is tho verdict of tho

Cedabtown, Ga., Juno 7, 1875.
We, the jurors, find that deceased,
John McCormick, camo to his death
on tho Gth day of June, 1875, about
7 o’cluek, p. m., at tho residence of 8.
B Crane, by means of two pistol flhoJfl
fired from the hands of W in. Meeks
aud B. C. Wiikon, either of whicli
would have produced death almost
iustunlaneously. From tho evidenco
submitted to tho jury, wo find that it
was premeditated murder on the part
of William Meeks; but tho jury being
divided in tho case of B. C. Willces,
six were in Javor of justifiable homi
cide, and five in favor of manslaugh
ter and one for murder.
Wo find, also, that decoased camo

now resides. Ho was at present em
