“over tho hill," that your readers may
know what iu going ou, in this, as well
ns other parts of tho town.
East End, ho named by ono of its
cit ’.one, is situated East of tho Court
House, and ou tho South side of the
Ruekmart road, nnd txtends from tho
lop of cemetery hill to Mr. J. C. Lump
kin's.
Codartown proper, (ton acres of
land) was ceded lo tho comity, 1
think, by the late Asa Prior. Homo
years after tho county was organized,
a Mr. Higgs located in town for ti
aho.it time. About this time tho poo-
pie commenced building on the East
side of tho Romo road, and East of
tho ten acres coded by Mr. Prior
Higgs was a man of a jovial turn, ai d
up to all kinds of innocent fun, and
called this now part of town “Hhiit-
tail Bern!.’ When East End and
other portions were added, iu 1870,
I think, l heard of this name for tho
first time, nnd have tided the following
couplet: "The Western portion, East
ern oml, Ccd.utown propov, Shirt-tail
bend."
