OFFICIAL Olid AX of l'Oi.K COUNTY
Double the (.'aunty Circulation of any j
dher paper—Dcflu Ittfutalion !
CEDAHTOWN, OA., OCT. 21. 1875
It is reported Hint on the flint of Co.
toiler Mieie wero in the United Btntcn
174 distillcrioA in operation, producing
188.883 gallons of spirits for tbn
month of September.
United States Hnnator Gookrill, of
Stissonri, says that he believes any
further contraetion of tho curroncy
would prove disnstroun, and that ho is
opposed to inflation, no-called, uti
le <s it becomes absolutely necessary to
hUstnin the bunitufeB irItrests of the
country,
Senator Gordon of Georgia, says
lhat ‘'reputation and dishonor aro
both at tho ond of the road lhat loads
to the wrock of private fortunes, and
this in the rond upon which tho con*
tractionists would lend tho people of
the country. Tlml’n a plain, tangiblo
proposition that requires no argument
to elucidate it. Tho real repudiation
's aro those who rob tho people of
their power to pay.
A Texas judge is credited with tho
following neat decision: "The fact is,
Jones, tho jail is an old rickety affair,
cold as an iron wedge. You applied
to this court for release on bail, giv
ing it na yout opinion that you would
freeze to death there. The weather
haa not moderated, and to keep you
from freezing, I will direct tho sheriff
to hang you at four o'clock (his after
noon.
Tho election, suya (ho Cincinnati
Commercial, placca both puiiica on
their good behavior for the presiden
tial con teals of tho contonnial year.
The republican party receive their
warning last fall. Tho democrats bnvo
in yesterday’s experience, a greatly
needed lesson lhat may be of much
service to them. Tho floating voto
grows with tho intelligence of tho poo-
ple, and tho politioal organizations
aro udmonishod Hint neither can win
with iti* worst olomonti in front.
Thu National Republican, adminis
tration organ, of thin morning, nays
that tho pope’s too has more to do
with the result in Ohio than the ma
jority of hard-money republicans aro
willing to admit. It adds that the
hard-money plank was not ouffloieptly
popular to win the election, and tho
republican party would hare bocu de
feated if it had not arsutovd flie same
position as was taken by Grant in his
spoech in l)ts Moines, Iowa.
Slwi'p kilting Dogs.
Hi him it Record:—-In respousu to
your article of week before I .m , L will
uubwor for tho people near Triors Sta
tion. First, I will give you a few sta
tistics of their work in this section. I
moan sheep-killing dogs.
I havo ouly boon boro sineo 1872,
lint their ravages iu that length of
tiino havo been astonishing. Mr.
James MoKibhon lost eleven sheep
in two nights; Mr. D. N. Hampton
UV seven iu one night, ail totally loct
iu tholr caresses wet a ao decayed when
found that neither the fit nor tho
vi.\ woro worth anything. Mr.
Jack Ellis, if 1 nimltik * not, lost sever
al sheep from dogs. Mr. C F. Milli-
t'ftii, wo remember, lost tome, and Mr.
Jno. 1*. Grouuwoocl, in 1873 or 1871,
lo4 noarly his whole Hade by d- gs
while grazing in a pasture uour tho
house. Mia Mhooiuake lost many of
her sheep during the past two years.
Iti fact, 1 du not know of any oi.e who
has tried to raise sheep, that lias not
lost more or less ol their llock during
the past two years.
Toe loss by dogs iu this imimdiute
settlement during the past two years
in slim p husbandry alone has not been
less than $200, while their profit in
othor things have been $500 less than
nothing. All the haulers in this sec
tion who have very tine dogs are in fu-
\or of a dog-law, as much for the pro
tection of their breeds ns for the pro
tection of sheep husbandry. Iu fact I
beliwo that tho most oxtonoivo hun
ters aro tho most iu favor of it. As
you vruntod tho opinion of tho pe pie,
I hurdily thiuk I need to express ai v
ns 1 behove the people generally look
upon »( ns ouo of tho most ccjuoiu-
i.ud steps that any legislature could
overtake. There are many persons
in this community, who aro w ilting
upon tl o legislature to pass the dog-
law to double their stock sheep, and
many contemplate sheep raising alto
gether, nud some aio so confident tho
law will pssi that they have already
begun to buy their sheep Conse
quently, I Buy it will not ouly be a de-
ab’e and a | i ntur step niton the
pait of our legislature, hut will be a
9 sad disappointment upon the pari of
i he people if it is not pa r *ed. Wo
have buffeted from dogs iu sheep hus-
: n.hy untill we aro tired of their de-
produtions, sad wo now apply to tho
government authorities to assist us in
i tiding ourselves of the tumble potd
and Vo beliovo that tho oars of honor
able legislators aro open to tho calls of
the pooplo, and ns it is tho pooplo who
want the law passed, and they who
havo tho tax to pay, I do dot see why
tho legislature should hositnto one
inoinont to pasi tho law. I hoo no
harm lhat such a law could pro
duce, na dogs aro worthless property
ns they are at any event, but tax them
nud wo will not only make them in
strumental in progressing tho earns of
education, bur wo will savo the bread
and meat that tho poor negro and the
ignorent white man and tho extrava
gant rich man throws away evory day
upon worthlc-HS curs and flop-eared
honmla Wo will nlso increase the
revenue collected on sheep to three
times its present value, and conse
quently benefit not only the people,
hut do a great deal to rid ourselves of
enormous state debt by a means that
we will not only nover miss the reve
nue paid, but would bo nblo to pay
more from the increased income in
tho cheep husbandry business. Then
why should the logishi!.tiro hesitate u
moment to pass a law which would
not only profit the slato ns a source
of revenue, but bo a source of actual in
come to tho people ? I do hopo thut
tho press will tuko hold of the matter
and endeavor to impress upon our
legislature tho importance of such a
stop. Bouroeoih
