Cavo Spring is a great little town,
after all. They havo a ulce, quiet way
of doing things over there that is de
cidedly to our liking. Their last on-
terpriso for making llioir healthful
little town attractive is tho establish
ment of a Union Female Seminary of
a high grad*. ' It is presided over by
Prof. Thou. B. Batty, an educated,
accomplished gentleman from Italnigh,
N. C. Wo append below a notice of
the school and its teacher, by tho
Cafq 9prirlg Knlqfpripo, called forth
by a visit and personal Inspection by
the editor of that paper :
Wo had the pleasure last Friday of
witnessing tho rccitaLion of a class of
Homo eight or ten young ladies of
I’rof. Boiloy'sschool in Physical Geog
raphy, or Geology, which is treated of
in tho first part of tho book. Tho
work used is by Frof. Maury, ami is a
standard text book iu our best schools.
This recitation embraced a reviow of
the week's work, and ovinced on the
part of the young ladios a thorough
knowledge <>T tho geological forma
tion of the ourtli from its incipient
state up to tho creation of man. Wo
know not whon wo havo spont an honr
more profitably or pleasantly tlmu in
listening to tho examination of this
class. Ouo thing wo notiood vory
clearly, that tho young ladios know a
great ilonl morn about geology than
taught in tho hook, and before
tho exorcises wero through, wo found
out that this knowledgo had boon ob
tained from tliotr excellent toucher's
method (if instruction. Lying upon
tho table before him was a varied
collection of specimens to illiiutrato
and cuforco tho leasou, and it was
really interesting to son with what fa
cility tho young Indies could classify
these specimens, showing how thor
oughly they had boon drilled. To a
practiced eye, oven ouo recitation
furnishos a pretty good index as to
the qualification of a teacher and his
tin t hod of instruction. Judgeing from
tho ouo wo wituisrcd, us well as tho
general order and decorum of the
school room, wo conclude without
hesitation thut Frof. Bniloy is a well
qualified, thorough, pructicul lonelier,
fully able lo luoct tho highest expec
tation of those who may entrust llioir
laughters or vn rds to his care, and
ivo cannot too strongly urge upon a l
our people lo patrouizu this school.
Wo will add llmt thoso at a dis
tance can obtain board in our best
families at vory low rates for the
timed.
Tho vep'H'ts received from vail
ons portions of Indiana, Mim^uri, ll<%
linoiw, and other Staton, that thous
ands of hogs aro dying with cholera.
This should stimulate our'farmers to
fatten nil tho polls they possibly can
this fall, and ooonomizo iu its use.
