Still Anotucu Attkmit.—*Only hn-t
week wo chronicled an attempt
made by two negroes lo break jail.
On last Monday night Charley Gor
don discovered that nil attempt was
being made to escape by Meeks and
Turbovillo. About 8 o’clock Gor
don went up stairs and hoard
a suspicious noise, and on going up
to the door discovered that Meeks and
Turbovillo wero out of their iron cages
ami at work on tho room door. Mr.
Gordon went down stairs and got two
• three citizens logo with him to tho
jail. On opening the door, pistol in
hand, Meeks and Turin villu rushed
backed to their cages. Meeks had
wronehud his rage door open with a
bod slat, and unlocked Turbovillu’s
door with a key ho had mu !u of a
bone. They had made an attempt to
turn three negroes out of their cages,
but failed. They lmd a case knife,
with which they had cut several inch
3 iuto tho wooden facing, and might
have got through this door in another
hour or two, had they not boon dis
covered. but the hall door would ll«Vo
presented another obstacle, and it is
not likely this could have been cut
through beloro day. Tho negroes say
tho programme was to kill Gordon had
ho entered alone, and rush out, but
they, of course, ditiy this. Meeks
< to attack him with n lied tint and
Turbovillo with the knife. On Tues
day these two prisoners wore chained
to their cages with a heavy chain, one
cud fasten to the unklu and the other
around several iron bars, both ends
being beaded with heavy iron brads.
Their chain s of escape now are rath
er "slim."
