A convention of tho Democratic parly of Polk county assembled in tho court house on Tuesday, July 4th, to select dth gates to represent tho county in tho approaching guberna torial conventiod. The convention was called to order by Capt. J. A. Peek, chaiiman of tho county oxcc- ccutive committer, and announced roady for business. On motion of Muj. J. A. lilunco, Col. J. O. Waddell was called to tho chair. On motion of Capt. W. F. Turner, I)r. Wm. Bradford was cho* non secretary. He says that ho would like to givo uh p plenty lo cat, and lie knows that wo do not got enough, and hnl< b to see it, but can’t help himself, lie says that Mr. 11. P. Lumpkin don’t allow him to givo any more to eat. I don’t wish you any harm, but it seems that you wont to see a poor man who is in jail suffer for something to out. You beom to forget that some of the best men that ever lived havo been in prison. Wo get a little to oat of mornings and at dinner, and sometimes wo don’t get any thing to cat or drink from morning till night. Mr. C. P. Gordon allows Amos to cutfao us, ai d to tell us if ho lmd his way, lie would not givo us u drop of water to drink; hut says that ho hates to see ns suffer ing and if ho could, would gi.o us a plenty to cat; lie hays that ho is woili ng for Mr. iI. P. Lumpkin by the mouth, and that Mr. Lumpkin will not allow him lo give us any more. Mr. Gordon further says that ho would givo us clothes and blankets to keen us warm, but Mr. Brewer will not al low it, I think that if any ono of you will oomo and take the curbing and other abuses that I have to tuko, you would not say anything about unruly prisoners. Von would try to got out of this place. It seems to me iliat if tho county allows 40 cents a day for feeding prisoners, wo poor Btifl'uors ought to get at least 15 ce nts worth of rations. As lo the negro being ul lowed to curso tho prisoners it is a fahehood and without any fouuelation whatever. As to Judge Browor, ro- forrnd to in Meeku lettor, the re is not a shadow of truth in it.
