wholo country, is to be promptly car
ried out aB the rule of your ad
ministration, I anticipate the ready
fulfillment of the just and reasonable
hope inspired by the advancement of
tho policy you bavo unfolded; a policy
which found a responsive echo in ov

that I feel the strongest confidence
that tho wiso and patriotic policy an-

prosperity and harmony. Thanking

Washington, April 2.—-At the cabi
net mooting this morning this morn
ing the secretary of war was dirootod
to prepnro an order trunsforing tho
troops from tho stale houso in Colum
bia, S. C., to their camp.
Washington, April 2.—A formal or
der to Gon. Huger to romovo tho
troops from tho stnto house at Colum
bia is being propnred by tho Secreta
ry of War, but is not to bo sent to
to linger or made public till
to-morrow., Gon. Sherman was clos-
olod with Secretary McCrary for Romo
time boforo the preparation for tho
order was commenced, which will bo
in the nature of a dispntoh to Con-
erul Huger nud not through the reg
ular military channels. It is general
ly beliovod that the order will not bo
sent until submitted to tho cabinet
to-morrow afternoon.
Gov. Chamborlaiu, up to 1 o'clock,
did not boliovo tho conclusion to re
move the tropps from tho statu houso

offloial confirmation of tho foot, ho
said, "it ends tho strngglo and makes
Gon. Hampton practically, governor.”

When Gov, Hampton was inform

offloial notification that au order
wonld bo issued for tbo romovnl of
the troops from the stnto houso, he
expressed himself much gratified, but
said it was no moro than he oxpeotod

Timely Warning.
Tbo Macon Telegraph hn* tbo fol
lowing very timely suggestion to our
farmers. Will they profit by it?
The special object of this articlo is
to sound the alarm to tho country,
that many farmers are returning to
tbo old and ruinous poliey of rnising
much cotton and little corn. Wo de-
rivo this information diroet from one
of tho most extensiva and entorpris
ing farmers in tho stnto.
Stimulated by tho late increased
price and demand for the groat staple
and the enhanced credit which tbo
prudent operations of tho past year
bavo already created, our Imsmnd-
inon aro laying in larger supplies of
bacon, nnd purchasing commercial
fertilizers to an extent unprecedented
Tho latter are procured upon
terms highly favorable, nnd wo com
mend their general use under free ne
gro labor of booping up tho produc
tiveness of the soil. But alas, nino
tonths of these plant stimulants aro
to ho applied to tho cotton crop, and
though it is now certain Hint tho yield
in oats will he greatly diminished, yet,
in many portions of tho state tho
acreage of corn ih said to bo smaller
than for several years past.
This is simply suicidal, nnd affords
tho best possible illustration of tho
folly nnd greed of man.
Now, wo ask, wlmt will bo the con
dition of .Southern cotton growers
next yoar if, ns highly probable, the
Turkish question culininates in a gen
eral European war, and meat and
broad go kiting upwards, and cotton
takes a docondiiig grade, which will be
tho inevitable result? •
Suppose, also, a dry sunnnurciirtnilH
tho yield of the cereals and tlin rava
ges of tho graHshoppors are saporad-
dod ? Is it not well to bo prepared
for Hiieh contingencies? In the event
they should occur, and cotton fails to
pay for its production, lo say nothing
of tho intonso satisfaction and com
fort of full hnrncs, wlmt. n bonanza
tile southern planter would onjoy in
tho foreign demand for liis surplus
grain and other farm products.
Now therefore, whilo there is yet
abundant time, and wo are masters of
tho situation, by every consideration
of good sense, patriotism and sound
poliey, we ndjuro our farmers to cut
off tbo cotton crop at least one-third,
hotter half, and supply tbo hiatus
with corn, pons, German millet, up
land rico, Biigar cano, and sweet po
tatoes. And don't spare tho fertili
zers upon these crops. They will mul
tiply the yiold almoBt indefinitely,
nnd wo Hindi retain our erodit, and
ronlly become independent and happy

I think our pooplu nggree with "no
convention,” as far as my information
lion goes. If they do not they might
too. The cry of retro nohment nnd
reform during eloo tion times, was
snug ill ovory song and whistled in
in every tune. Ami what did our
Legislature do ? Voted themselves
the same soveu dollars por day, and
reduced the juryman’s wages to one
dollar, per day.
Tho little word patriotism should
be defaced, and tho word tu the office

A correspondent of tho Southern
Farmer tells how au old poultry rais
er distinguishes sex in eggs. It is ns
follows:
"Eggs with tho air bladder on tho
sides will produce pullets.” The old
man was hu certain of the truth of
his dogma, nnd tho poultry yard so
far confirmed it, that I determined to
make experiments upon it this year.
I lmvo done so, carefully registering
evory 'bladder vorticle' or bladder on
ono side, rejecting every ono which
was nut decidedly ono way or tho
other, as iu some it wns only slightly
out of tho centre. The following is
the result: 58 chicbens hatched; 3
aro doad; 11 too young yot to deoido
upon tboir Rex ; of tho remaining 44
every one has turned out truo to the
old man’s tboory. I tried it myself
nud found it to bo correct, nud I think
it to bo of groat practical advantage,
I am pleased to givo it my full in
dorsement.
