"Owing to the general depression of buaineaa, and consequent scarcity of the rhino," said the proprietor, looking the tall mnn over, "a dinner will coat you thirty-five conU, in advance." “ I have nothing with mo but a check on a Boston bank,” obeeived the tall man. 44 Checks on Bouton banks ain't worth a copper,” remarked the landlord; 14 1 guem you'll have to dine more sumptu ously elsewhere.” 44 Can’t I do something for a dinner V” aaked the tall man, as a hungry pang gripped him. 44 You can pay,” said the proprietor, impressively. 44 You give me my dinner,” said the tall man ; 44 1 agree to clean your house of every rat in it. I have performed the feat in many hotels throughout the coun try with most satisfactory results.” The proprietor accepted the bargain a* a most ad\ ntageous one to himself, and the tall m a seated himself at the table, where be id fearful execution among the victii !i. He finished his dinner in half an -our, picked his teeth with a fork, culled lor a cigar, and proceeded to enjoy it. 44 Now, then,” said tho proprietor, when the tall man had finished his smoke, 44 let’s get to business.
