Odr report of the Pie-Nic

come too late ; the oilier, because there
was no name accompanying the same.
We publish no anonymous communica

New Commers —Messrs J W Crum

have bought out the drug' store of
Messrs Hunt Rankiiufe Lamar, and have
set up for themselves, in the old stand of
Jones&Carswell. 'A e wish them as
well as other new comers, a career of
usefulness and prosperity in their new
home.
Concert —The two concerts given hy
Madame Murrelle, assisted by Miss Jt ssie
Nebhut and Mr. Robt. Langford, were
nice entertainments. Some of the pieces
were above the capacity of our Conyers
people to appreciate, but In the main the
audience was highly pleased- “Annie
Laurie” and “Old folks at home” were
rendered touchingly tender and beautiful.
We are proud of cur Georgia talent.
Fish.

The Still Pond hear Conyers, under
the control of Dr. J. A. Stewart, was
let off on Tuesday ot this week. Sev
eral of the boys from town, as well as
the people living near the pond, were on
hand. About a thousand of the finny
triba were taken into custody. . And of
the fragments there were taken up fif
teen baskets full, or fish for that many
families. W congratulate the lucky
ones. For who cares for hard times
when there’s fish a plenty. *

Captain A. W. Carswell is up on a
visit to see the beautiful “Wood” ot
Rockdale county. He ;came up last
week. He to have come up
on the same train with a certain Miss ;
but he missed the trein, and therefore
missed the Miss that was on the train
that he missed.
What a Miss was that Miss. We’d
hate to miss such a Miss as A. W. Cars
well missed. He liked to have missed
that Miss that he missed on the train,
that he missed last Sunday. But he
didn’t. He had thy pleasure of seeing
that Miss, that he missed on the train,
that he missed. It was a bliss to see
the Miss. And not amiss to see the
Miss, which he missed —the Miss.
Rockdale Sunday School Associa
tion.
The Conyes Presbyterian, Methodist.
Baptist and Smyrna Presbyterian Sunday
Schools, met at Ihe Methodist church in
Conyers, at 9 o’clock, Saturday morning
formed a procession hud marched to the
Academy grounds. After the Schools
were all seated with the audience which
was very large, the cxeiciseo of the day
were opened by a song from the entire
Rockdale Sabbatlw School Association;
then prayer by Rev II Qoigg ; then
song by the entire association, led by A
M Helms, Esqr.; then a speech ii’oin
Mr Lll Turner ; then song by M E S
S; then' spoech by Mr. Rosser ot
Smyrna Presbyterian church. ; then
song by the Smyrna Presbyterian church;
then a speech by Mr D C Langford ot
the Conyers Baptist Sunday School ;
then song by the Baptist Sunday School;
then a speech by Dr. M R Stewart of
the Pesbytorian Sunday School; then a
song by the Presbyterian Sunday School;
then"a speech by Master Gussie Guinn,
of the Methodistist SS; then a song
from all the schools.
Dr O L Smith, the orator ot the day,
did not put in his appearance, for some
reason unknown to the audience or the
committee that was appointed to notify
him ot liis election. Will the committ e
explain? Theie were many ptesent to
hear the Doctor, and feel that they lost a
treat, as they always do when they fail
to hear him. The time allotted to the
Doctor .was occupied by Hon John II
James, he having been called out by the
audience. His talk was fraught with
good advice. I trust the entire audlenee
will heed what he said, as well as what
was said by each of the speakers of the
different Sunday Schools; for their
speeches were well delivered, and wore
full ot goou advice. ,
The singing was splendid; a'nd, in
fact, all of the exercises were instructive
and edifying. ,
After the exercises came the dinner.
We we>e reminded again, if the men
would only do their duty half as well as.
ibe women, there would be no biting
hunger in this war’d.
We return thanks to the ladies with
whom we dined for otir excellent dinner,
and especially Mrs. J R McCaJa for that
excellent fried chicken.
After dinner I was called to town on
business, but learned that the evening ex
ercises were in keeping with the morn
ing exercises.
The above, from our reporter, Judge
Gleaton, was left out ot our last issue for
want of space.

Died.
Rev. Jesse W. Carroll, of the North
Georgia Conference M. E. Church,
South, died at his residence near Con
yers, May 11th, at about 9 o’clock, p. m.
He was 76 years old, and had been a
traveling preacher for about 86 or 37
years. He was an affective preacher for
several years when bis health failed, and
he was superanuated. He continued in
this relation the rest of his life. * During
the active years of his ministry 30 to 40
years, to be an “Itinerant preacher,” sub
jected to much labor and many hard
ships : Long rides, protracted absences
from home, and almost daily proceedings
on circuits, numbering from 15 to 30
appointments each ; were - some of the
ordinaly toils and privations of the
Methodist preacher, ,
Brother Carroll did his share of this
hard work, and as a result, no
doubt of the exposure and labor of thes
years, spent many years of his latter life
in pain and affliction.
His last sickness was painful and pro
tracted for three weeks. Yet he was
patient and uncomplaining. He said to
me a little before he died that “he
thought all was right as to his future,”
gave a message to the Conference,, and
requested that Dr. Jas. E. Evans, who
had known him long, preach his funeral.
On Saturday morning, the 15th, hits
remains were deposited in" the cemetery
in Conyers, to await a joyful resume
