Centennial Courtship.
I arson W , who has been trav
elling in some ot the lower counties of
this State, tells us a centennial court
ship that happened over eighty years
ago, that he heard related while on his
trip. He says the custom was for the
suitor to hold the candle while the young
lady was at work of an evening. At a
certain house where there was a young
lady. A young man a stranger, stopped
to stay ail night. As was the custom
in those days he took the candlo to hold
for Miss Mary, while she plied the nee
dle and thread. After aivhile the young
man said, ‘Miss Mary’ Tin a good mind
to burn you ! ‘What for’ ? She said.
‘Because you wont have me?’ He said.
She replied. ‘l’ll have you it you’ll have
me’, Thus ended the first chapter. In
the morning as the young man was
about to leave, he shook hands with Misß
Mary and asked her it she was of the
same opinion she was last night, She
answered in accents low and tender. ‘I
am, if you are.’ Be said be ready, for
in tl ree weeks I will be back here and
marry yon—which he did.. There was
an honest simplicity, and earnestness
about courtship and marriage in those
days, that some ot our latter day lovers
would do well to profit by, and if the
fair ones don’t speak out, the young men
ought to burn them, because they won’t
have them.

“Living, Dublic Issues Incidental

I see the Cornier calls wet or drv, dog
or no dog, Public School or no public
school, one term or two, Homestead or
no homestead, ‘dangerous issues.’ They
are dangerous issues, to candidates—milk
and cider candidates, who wi sh to pan
der, to whims and fancies of all, aud
loose the vote! of none, instead of pur
suing the course of rectitude irrespective
ot cocsequences, and who l ather than be
beat for office would sacrifice all princi
ple.
They are further called ‘unimportant
issues’. Noticiug the time taken up by
our solons both in congress, and ihe
general assembly of Georgia iu discuss
mg these questions.
We should think they thought them
•important, We say they are important.
Bence the time has been properly occu

Satisfy your, minds what is right in the

best for your consciences in this life.
If not, we are sure it will best tor them,

It is very likelv untrue. The report is

The above rumor is certainly untrue

One commendable feature in the up*

well be the reading of compositions by

will at once commend itself 1 to the ad
