circulating the story that Gov. Tilden is
about to send $3,500,000 into that State
to bny up the voters. They refer to
ifuse millions with evident satisfaction,
and it is morally certain that if Uncle
Samuel really would send that amount of
cash where the Radicals could get at it,
the box would be* robbed within twenty
four hours, before negotiations could be
inaugurated with the general

Asa general thing, candidates make
too many pledges. It is right and prop
t r that they should define their position
in regard to public issues of vital import
Unco, but no necessity of their coming
before the people with a striug of pled
ges as long as a yardstick. A candidate
cannot intelligently commit himself to
the details of plans which he does not
fully undesrtand. When he takes his
seat in the General Asrembly, and meets
a blc men from all parts of the State, it
is very probable that ho will see many
things in a different light. New facts
will coma to his kuowltdge ; his mind
will expand to broader views of public
policy, and his original predilections an I
prejudices will be very much modified.
