Conyers Cornet Band discoursed several

well pleasee l with the speeches, and all

ever delay the court. Judge Wright
delivered a splendid as well as an ex
haustive charge to the grand jury, cov
tring all the points and grounds in rela.

Covington Dots.
The number ot bales of cotton shipped
from Covington during September, 1875,
was 800 ; and the number shipped dm ing
September, 1876, is 1,410. Excess ot
the present season over the same period

Prof. J. L. Jones ad family (except
his eldest so->, Waiter,) left tor Columbia,
S. (J., last Wednesday, whither lie goes
to assume the Presidency of Columbia
Female College. Prof. Jones has beeu
a resident ot Covington for about, 24
years, and for a long time was President
of S. M. F. College. He is a rare schol
ar, and has but tew equals as a teacher.
The Augusta Chronicle tfc Sentinel of
last Thursday has this to say :
“The grand jury of Newton couniy
recommends that the County Court be
abolished, ami the Judge has already
tendered his resigna ion. Here the
Cutility Com l is a deservedly popular in
stitution. It lias saved the tax payers
money aad lias been of great benefit to
the people. We would not very well get
along tvitnout it.”
Col. S. K. Johnson, Superintendent of
the Georgia Kail Hoad, has kindly fur
nished the ladies of Covington with a
passenger coach, ree of '-barge, tor the
excursion to Atlanta, tomorrow, for the
benefit of the yellow lever sufferers.
This is a most generous act upon his
part, and our people should avail them
selves of the opportunity ot going to
Atlanta cheap, and at tl'u same time con i
