A ride out to the Rockdale Fair
Grounds behind. Capt. John M. Zach y’s
fine clay bank mare on Tuefld ly after
iiooii w .ts mi enjoyable tt Ip. We found
the workmen busy at work under the
supervision of Capt. A. F. Simms, The
grounds are nearly enclosed ami contain
aboil*, eight acres. Mr. Newton Hoi*
lingsworlh has given the Fair Associa
tion the use of the ground for live years, for
tin palings and one or two of the buildings
at the end of that time.
He is to have the use of the grounds and
buildings when they are not occupied
by the Association. Three lulls are in
proaeH of erection, viz: Floral, Agri
cultural and Mechanical. Fifty-six
rtallfl tor stock of different kinds, Bx 9
feet, have been built. The hotel or eat
ing house is nearly completed; and will
he ready for the public by the time the
fair opens. The race track is over a
quarter of a mile found, the inside raliug
being exactly one fourth of a mile. It
will be put in good order by tin time it
is needed 1 Tne Judges’ stand is on a
high point near the upper portion of the
grounds, where good views can be had
of the whole line of track. Two wells
have been dug and will supply plenty of
good water, tor man . and beast. Two
entrance gates will be sufficient lor all
the passing in and out, as the pass-ways
are broad and several can go out and in
at the same time. The entrance fee is
Fifty cents or $1 25 for a season ticket
Cheap enough tor the times taking into
consideration the sights to be seen.
We hope every man, woman and
child, in Rockdale county and vicinity
will be on hand. The Rockdale Fair
Association are making great efforts to
do good for themselves and their people,
as well as to please the public. Let us
all go and see and lend a helping
to the enterprise.

Whilst you, poor child, have scorched your

Like yonder foolish moth !
Or did he laeve his lone true heart,
To pine away with grief;
And like the autumn frost that blights
The green and quivering leaf ?
Or was he fickle, vain and light,.

And found her idol was not gold.
But clay, though clay so fair ?
For who can cure the heartsick soul,

Or lift the stricken hopeless mind, ,
And give it peace aud calm ?
At this dread hour, the Tempter came,
When darkness held its sway ;
And gloom had settled on a soul,
