‘ "OUR OWN.”
If I lwd known in t o morning
How wearily all the day
The word* nukiud
Would trouble my mind
I said when you went away,
1 bad been more carefiU/tUrling,
Nor given yon needless pain;
But wc vet *• our own”
With look and tone
We might never take back again.
For though in the quia evening
You ii ay give me the kin 'of peace,
Vet it might be
That never for me
The pain of the bean shon.J ceiwc.
How many go forth in the morning
That never come home at night,
And hearts have broken
For harsh words spoken,
That sorrow can ne’.rset nglit.
Wc have careful thoughts for the stranger,
Aud smiles lor the sometime guest,
But oft for “ our own”
The bitter tone,
Though we love “ onr own” the bqst.
Ah I lip- with the curve impatient.
Ah! brow with that 1 jok of scorn,
’Twere a cruel fate,
Where the nigbt too lato
To undo the work of morn.

My Friend. •
(4fltrCu German.)
The friend who holda a mirror to my lace,
And hidiug none, is not afraid to trace
My faults, my smallest blemishes, within;
Who friendly warns, reproves me if I sin—
Although it acems not so—ae is my friend,
But he who, ever flattering, gives me praise,
Who ne'er rebukes, nor censnrcs, nor delays
To come with eagerness and grasp my hand,
And pardon uic, ere pardon 1 d mand—
He is my enemy, although he seemed my friend.

preciated the value of the property and the
owner of the mortgage demanded his pay.
The money was not forth-coming and a
sheriff’s sale followed. The capitalist own
ing the mortgage hid in the property for
five hundred dollars, and now holds a claim
against the former owner for four thousand
five hundred dollars. The origin-d owner
ha- lost his property and is in debt to the

and the proof can readily lie produced It
is because such swindling is possible under

many hundreds of a similar nature that
