Death.—We regret to learn of the death
of Mrs. Pleasant Lewis which occurred on
the 19th. inst. Mr Lewis, as is well known,
is a crippled Confederate soldier and has
the sympathies of his Iriends in this sad
bereavement.
Botanical Phenomenon.—Mrs. Dr.
Pendleton, of this city, has a seedling orange
shrub, (of the Shnldoch variety), three
itches high, with a fragrant full size bloom

the seed planted last Christina* day,in a flower
nit. This may lie put down as a most un-
leeountable freak of nature.
Strawbk ries.—We are indebted to
Judge A. P Cohb for a treat of delicious
trawberries gathered from his beds upon his
ilnee near town, which in size and luseious-
nessof the fruit were the finest we have seen
this season. There are of the Wilson Union
variety.

Our friend states that Saturdays were grand
occasions at Clarkeshoro’. Horse racing
and shooting tor beef,- were the favorite
amusements. The races were for 300
yards, aud executed with Indian ponies.
He says that the old race track has been
entirely obliterated—all grown up in large
pines. Tbe Cherokee Indians were fre

they went to trade and buy their brandy

his daughter.
His reminiscences of Clarkeshoro’ aud
Athens which run Ir.ick to 1803, are very
interesting. He states that he visited the
former a few day- ago, and not a vestige of
this primitive village is left His rider
brother was a student of Doctor Meig’s
school, which was conducted ill a wooden
buildings within bounds ot the present
College campus n »d he brought his orother
down on Monday morning from Clarkes-
boro’ and came for him ag iiii on Saturday
afternoon. The “old College’’ building was
not then completed. Clark shorn’, in 1803,
consisted of about 200 inhabitants. Its
olid in its formation that n tr.tek was laid
upon it nod the train for several weeks pas
sed over as if upon a bridge; at the expira
tion ot which time, very suddenly and with-.
nit any warnins;, the immense mass gave
way and floated down the stream carrying
upon it the track. The country from Phila
delphia to New York presented a most pictu
resque appearance. 'Upon almost every
house were to lie seen, wafted to the breeze
the colors ol the nation which were thus dis
played in honor of the Centennial; along
this route is alinosta continuous village and I
was most agreeably impressed with the neat
ness and cleanliness with which everything
was kept. The train stopped but a few
moments in Philadelphia and consequently
I obtained but a bird’s eye view o the Cen
tennial grounds, which presented a very
handsome appearance. Here in New York
is everv appearance of prosperity and plenty;
business it is true, is somewhat dui), but
buddings are going up on all sides and that
too of the most expensive, and magnificent
character. The people here seem to know
no such word as fail, and the vitn and ener
gy which they di-play are really very refresh
ing, hut at the same time the selfishness,
which so strangely characterizes their every
action is equally disgusting and repulsive
to a Southern man. accustomed os he is to
the chivalrv and politeness of our own sunny
dime, which, after all, is the nn>st favored
land upon the face of the earth, and if our
!«:>| It* will but awaken front the lethargic
indifference which seems to enthrall their
faculties, they can undoubtedly be second to
none in any of the requirements necessary to
constitute a great and Imppv country.
They have in operation here an elevated
railway: the track is firmly supported and
braced upon a single row of strong iron |K>sts
at an attitude of about fifteen feet above
the level of the street. They purpose build
ing several similar lines, 1 anil had actually
commenced work when they were stopped
by an injunction granted the Horse Compa
nies, who claimed that it was an itilritige-
ment on their rights. I do not think, how
ever. that the building of these lines would
interfere materially with these receipt.*, for as
they have stations at about every five blocks
only, and would probatily convey those only
who would wish to go several miles, it would
undoubtedly lie a great convenience to those
living in the upper jiart of the city, as the
trip which now takes about an hour would
then lie made in fifteen minutes.
I suppose that vou have heard ere this of
the arrest of ex-Guv. Bullock nthis residence
Albion iu the western part of New
York State, upon the requisition of Gov.
Smith upon Gov. Tilden. I saw the ex-
Governor as he diseniliarked from the Cen
tral train to-day at the Grind Central Depot,
under the kind and supervising care of
the Deputy 8heriff of New York. He did uot
seem in the slightest degree perturbed or
disconcerted at the prospect before him. It
i* to lie most earnestly desired that the peo
ple of Georgia whom this man so ruthlessly
defrauded while in a position of the greatest
trust, should see that the justice which he so
richly deserves should be meted out to him
according to his deserts. Clinch.
