organized the Credit Mobilier, built
the Union Pacific, loumieda the sys
tem of railways in Colorado and
Nebraska, built a 100-room hotel in
sixty days, and raised Omaha from an
Indian village into a cosmopolitan
city, and yet has now the reputation
of being “the champion lunatic of
the world.” Who is neither Chris
tian nor Jew, Mohammedan nor iuti-
del, who hates hypocrisy and loves
honor. Who never belonged to
Church, party, or club. Who never
held ofiiee and never voted. Who
organized Fcnianism, Communism
and Internationalism, and yet was
never a Fenian, Communist or Inter
nationalist. Who never wronged man
or woman—never was angry—never
bore any one malice. Who sincerely’
regrets if, in hot religious or j O ltical
controversy, he has unintentionally
injured any one’s feelings. Who

times around the world; can say,
“IIovv do you do?” in twenty lan
guages; has published a 6core of
books, and been praised and abused
in 10,000 newspapers. Who declines
to earn $40,000 a year on the lecture
stage. Who has foreshadowed all
the great events of the world for
twenty years. Who icseived 1,000
square nominations for the Presidency
from 1,000 conventions from Puget
Sound to Florida on his Greenback
platform, which Peter Cooper stole,
Who feels that he is 200 years old in
knowledge, and yet, is so young, he
wn only find companionship with
children, and has evoluted far enough
to understand that he knows just
enough to appreciate that he doesn’t
know anything. Whose health is so
great that ho caunot shake hands
with adults, eat animal food, remain
loug indoors, visit churches, theatres
or hotels. Whoso whole food con
sists of a bowl of boiled rice or a
kuked apple and a cup of coffee twice
evils attending the labor system as
now practiced, a committee consist
ing of Messrs T. J. Edwards, Win.
R. Tuck, John Christopher, W. J.
Crowly and B. S. Martin was ap
pointed to report matter for con
sideration ; when the following pres
amble and resolutions were reported
by the committee and adopted by the
meeting:
W e a portion of the citizens of
Oglethorpe, Clarke and Oconee
counties, recognizing the demoralised
condition of our labor system, deem
it our duty and interest to take some
steps tending towards establishing a
system that will give more general
satisfaction as well as confidence to
all concerned, to aid in bringing
about so necessary and desirable a
result.
We ask and hoop to receive the
cordial assistance and co-operation of
all good citizens.
Therefore be it resolved :
1st. That we will do all in our power
to produce and to keep up a better
state of feeling and of confidence be
tween employers and laborers.
2d. We pledge Ourselves to pay
good honest wages for good honest
labor, and to pay our laborers at all
times as good wages as we are able
to or the times will warrant, and to
pay them promptly when their wages

3d. That we will oliarge as mode
rate for supplies as circumstahces will

4th. That when we employ hands
for the year, either for money wages
or part of the crop as wages, we will
exact from them a full years work at
any and all kinds of farm work.
5th. That we will use no improper
means to induce laborers to leave
their employers to come to ns, nor
will we employ any laborer who is in
debt to his or her last employer for
supplies furnished him or her, with
out an agreement with such employer.
6th. That we will hire no hand to
do day work who is under contract
to do farm work, without an under
standing with his or her employer,
nor will we hir- as day laborers, any
tramp, idler or loafer who has no per
manent home.
7th. That we will neither feed, nor
furnish rations to any hand who is
able to work and refuses to do lt.
8th. That we will discountenance 1
disobedienco on the part of laborers
to their employers at all times..
9th. We regard the practice ot
purchasing seed cotton, loose lint cot
ton and other farm products not
delivered in merchantable order ana
at proper times, from any farm hand.
