H. H. CARLTON, - Editor.
The Senate has split on the Ed*
raunds resolution for a count of the
electoral vote by the Supreme Court
of the United States, and it has been
practically swamped. Morton, Spen*
cer, Conover and Patterson are op-
posed to it and that of course set
tles it.
General Grant and Hou. Abram S.
Hewitt, Chairman of the National
Democratic Executive Committee,
have had a “ bout ” regarding the
South Carolina affairs, in which Mr.
Hewitt shows Grant very deficient in
reconciling his statements made be
fore and after drinks. Well, the fact
as Contemptible as it is Slanderous.
There are no schemes or devices,
however vile and fraudulent, to which
the Radical party,, backed up by
General Grant, have not and will not
resort to in order to secure the inau
guration of Hayes. Already has the
action of this party insulted our oat*,
ional honor, shocked the houest senti
ment and aroused the indignation of
every honorable and fair minded
American citizen. But nothing
daunted, they show increasing evi
dence of an unrelenting determination
to practice that usurpation which
overthrowing the rights and will of
the people, as expressed at the ballot
box, will continue the government in
the hands of those who use it solely
tor personal and party agrandizement.
In reviewing the various .corrupt,
is, whiskey brains and livers are very
irregular and wont do to copper on. j contemptible and fraudulent schemes
resorted to by Radicalism 1
The political situation for the oast
few days remains unchanged. T.e
Congressional committees appointed
to .look, into the election returns
in the'States of Florida, Louisiana
and South Carolina are busily en
gaged in snaking their investigations,
and will make a fall report to Con
gress preparatory to the counting ol
the electoral vote by that body on
the 7th of February next. Then,
and not until then, will the anxious
people of this country know the fate
of our Republican institutions.
for the
purpose indicated, none strikes us as
being so malicious, so low and so
contemptible as the slanderous report,
that our Southern Representatives in
Congress are disposed to temporize
with Hayes, rather than resist his in
auguration, even with the full know
ledge and belief-that be has not been
legally elected. This is as low, mean
and contemptible as it is untrue and
slanderous, and of course is being
used by the Radical party to intimi
date the Northern Democracy in their
efforts for the just and rightful inau
guration of Governor Tildcn. r l Ins
