THE ATHENS GEORGIAN: MARCH 13, 187*.
While firing at the camp of the
enemy, we happened to drop a shot
into a coral of jackasses, and the con
sequent consternation and braying
have been more terrific than the

a sudden capitulation. That a sen
tence of our editorial should be tor
tured into a proposition to assassinate
Rutherford B. Ilayes, rather humil
iates us, even when we consider the
source. That a donkey should con
sider us litter for a lunatic asylum
than a criminal, is not pleasant. That
is the meaning ot the violent con
struction. Governor Hayes is a man,
heretofore, singularly pure of char*
acter, possessed of many lovable
traits. What would he gained in
passing the Adminstration % from his
hands to that oi \Y iliiam A. \\ heeler,
one of the worst of this conspiracy to
steal an Administration? Wheeler,
the man who accepts office from the
very returning board lie denounced
as rotten through and through !
It may be that Hayes is a mere
figure-head; his acceptance of a sjolen
office, indicates a lack of force of
character that argues badly for his
success in the tainted place that he
is called upon by thieves to occupy.
Nevertheless, he is a saint by the
side of the men who encompassed his
‘njnrv and oar ruin. The idiots can
not comprehend that the war in be
half of obr constitutional rights is not
against a man, but an organization.
The death of one or the death of a
hundred or a thousand, would be no
relief so long as the system eats like
a cancer through our entire sys em.
Let any part remain, and the poison
continues to corrupt and destroy.
Nothing was farther from our in-
tent than the crime with which these
loud-mouthed fools have charged us.
Assassination is npt only foreign, but
loathsome to tho American mind;
but open and armed resistance to
usurpation, that robs us of all remedy
through the ballot, is a part of our
nature, and to that we appeal, aud,

indictment to the contrary, we appeal

“ Yes, pet,” replied he, solemnly.
“ I suppose they are—1 saw such a
sad sight when I was out.”
“You did—what was it?” inquired
she.
“ Such a sad sight”—continued he,
keeping his fnco away that she might
not smell his breath—“I discovered
a young man whom'" I have known
for years drinking whisky.’’
“Y.m did?” i
“ Yes, standing right in plain sight
before me, partaking deeply and care
lessly of the intoxicating glass.”
There was a little pause, when the
young lady suddenly said :
“ lulward, was he standing light
in front of yon ?”
“ Yes, pet,” was the reply.
There was another pause, when the
young lady asked again:
“ Edward, don’t most of the fash
ionable saloon counters have great
nice mirrors right on the walls be
hind them ?”
Edward flushed a little, and looked
quizzical as he replied that he “be
lieved” they did.
And there he permitted the sub
ject to drop.

RESOLUTION OF THANKS, PASSED JAN
UARY 11tu, 1877.
now. H. II. Carlton, Athene, 6a.:
When the people of this City
bowed, trembling under their recent
dreadful calamity; when thousands
fled for safety; when industry was
paralyzed and commerce suppressed ;
when want, pestilence and death
joined in their ghastly and unsparing
work; when tenderness failed to
soothe and skill to save; when the
strong (grew weak and the timid
quailed ; when the brave were re
signed and only the reckless defiant:
Then came citizens and strangers,
from far and near—-a noble band—
with ready bands and willing hearts,
came unsolicited, upon this scene of
desolation, pain and woe, proffering
their devoted service—some sacri-
ficing their lives—to the needy, the
sick, the suffering, and the dead.
Then, too, from the North, the
East, the West, and the South, even
from beyond seas, came an inpouring
of benefaction, universal, and so lavs
ish that, leaving no room for want,
Religion blesses and Gratitude res
verses Humanity so supreme:
Therefore, Resolved, That the
thanks of this Association and of its
members individually, and in the
name of our grateful people, be, and
they are hereby, tendered to all
those who, whether citizens or
strangers, gave their personal ser
vices in any capacity, and also to all
those who, in Savannah, in the State
of Georgia, elsewhere in the United
States, and in other countries, con
tributed money or supplies to the
relief of the needy, sick and suffering
in the late epidemic in this city.
Resolved, That these resolutions
be printed, and signed by the Presi
dent and Secretary.
Resolved, That the same be pub
lished in the Morning News, and that
the papers of the country at large be
requested to copy.
Committee.—John R. Johnson,

The temperance revival in Detroit
has sent many men to thinking se
riously. One of the serious was dis
covered coming out of a Lamed
street saloon yesterday, and an ac
quaintance cellared him and said:
“You have been drinking.’’
u Not a drop,” was the reply.
“But I saw you wipe off your
mouth.”
“Yes, I wiped off my mouth, but
I hadn’t been drinking.”
“ That’s honest, is it ?’’
“ That’s honest. If you don’t be-,
lieve it. smell my breath.”
He turned his face, the other got bis
nose down to inhale, and as he stagjj
gered back, be called out:
“ If a little whisky will kill that
smell, you go and get it right away.
I’ll stand between you and the pledge,

Ask the Old Woman.—A gen
tleman traveling out West relates the
following:
Hiding horseback just at night,
through the woods in Signor county,
Michigan. I came into the clearing,
in the middle of •which stood a log
house, its owner sitting in the open
door smoking his pipe. Stopping my
horse before him, the foiling conver
sation ensued:
“Gcod evening, sir.”
“ Good evening.”
“ Can I get a glass of milk of you
to drink ?**
•‘Weill don’t know. Ask the
old woman.’’
By this time liis wife was standing
at his side.
“ O, yes,” said she, “ of course
you can.’’
While drinking it I asked :
I#.
“ Think we arc going to have a
storm ?
“ Well, really, I don’t know. Ask
the old woman—she can tell.”
“ I guess we shall get one right
away, said his wife.”
Again I asked. . %
“ How much land have you got
cleared here ?’’ 1
“ Well, really I don’t know, ask
the old woman—she knows.”
“ About nineteen acres,” said she
again answering.
Just then a troop gf children came
running and shouting around the
corner of the shanty.
* All these your children ?” said I.
“ Don’t know. Ask the old wo
man, she knows.” ; /.
I did not wait to hear any reply,
but d?ew up my reini and left imme

This unrivaled preparation has per
formed some of the most astonishing
cures that arc recorded in the annals of
history. Patients suffering for years from
the various diseases of the Lungs, after
trying different remedies, spending thou
sands of dollars in traveling and doctor

entirely recovered their health.
