NEW COTTON PLANT.
lllimUtl riitlfilin nf th« New Discovery.
The London Times has received a
letter from its Alexandria correspon
dent on the discovery of a new cot
ton plant, which supplies some addi
tional facts. The correspondent
says:
The cotton world of Alexandria is
just now immensely interested in the
alleged discovory ol a new species of
the cotton plant, which promises to
effect a revolution in the prospects of
Egyptian cotton. Every one knows
the story of M. Jumel, who, fifty
yeavs ago, walking in the garden of a
Turk at Cairo, noticed how well a
certain cotton tree flourished, and
how he took away the s.“eds there
from, and planted and replanted them
until he founded the pres -nt cotton
culture of Egypt, Well, it appears
a Copt has now made a new departure
of a similar kind. The results already I
obtained from the new plant are most
extraordinary. It compares with
the old as follows:
An ardeb (270 pounds) of ordina
ry cotton seeds sows, on au average,
eight feddans (acres), and produces
four cantars (100 pounds) of cotton
hand. If, as is stated, there are 400 AGENTS’ REPORTER . ly?brAgents! * Actually
ardebs of seed ready for sowing this | H overflowing witll goi; d information indispen-
March, and it multiplies itself by
sixty, as above stated, we shall have
for the following crop about 24,000
ardebs, and for March, 1879, there
will be enough to sow the cotton
country ten m’les over, as there are
only 700,000 feddanS in the whole of
Egypt which are fit for cotton cul
ture. Going one step further, and
supposing that the new plant. sup
plants the old. we should have a crop
of 7,000,000 cantars of cotton and
5,000,000 of seed, while the largest
crop ever known hitherto was pro
duced last year, aud only reached
3,000,000 ol cotton and 2,500,000 of
seed. To put the comparison in the
money form we should have £21,-
000,000 instead of £6,000,000. The
prospect is really iutoxicating. I
understand Mr. Calvert, our Vice
Consul, has sent a specimen of the
plant home to Ivcw Gardens, with
some of the seed, and many plants
have gone to England from the vari
ous cotton firms ol Alexandria.

More Bonds Called In.—On
Saturday the Assistant Secretary of
the Treasury issued the 42d call for
in seed—that is to say, the cotton I t ;ie redemption ol 5-20 bonds of 1865,
with the seed inside it as it conies May aud November. The call is lot
out of the cotton pod. Taking this $10,000,000 of which §7,000,000 are

but its yield is more than treble, and
has even been stated at five-fold.
But fny most trustworthy informant
only gives ten cantars per feddfin,
which I may add is the amount taken
by one of the leading firms as the
basis of their calculations as to the
effect of the new plant. They add
that it is difficult to say exactly what
would he the ordinary yield, as all
returns hitherto are the result of ex
ceptional culture on a small scale.
On this calculation of ten cantars
each arbed of seed would produce
eight cantars of cotton in seed—that
is to say, over double the. amount
produced by ordinary seed. At
present prices, each ardeb would re
turn about £240 in seed and cotton
together, instead of £96 as it does
The new cotton I am assured
on the best authority, is of good ap'
pearance commemally speaking, and
quite equal in quality to ordinary
Egyptian cotton. The plant grows
in a different manner from the ordi
nary cotton plant It grows to about
the height of ten feet, has a straight
vertical stem, without branches, with

with a view to its capacities of pro
duction in a given space. It is called
here Batnia cotton, from the resem
blance of the plant to a vegetable of
that name, and the Arabs maintain
that it is the result of a cross between
the two shrubs. But others say it
has been brought from the Soudon
or Equatorial Africa. Nothing, liow-
cver^s positively known. The his
tory of its discovery is curious. A
Copt, living in the upper part of the
delta, at a place called Berket-el-J3ab,
(“ Well df .the Lion,” a station ou
the Cairo Railway,) in the province
of Menouf, noticed ip the autumn of
1872 a plant in a cotton field wholly
different from the rest. He collec
ted the pods, separated the seed, and
planted it in secret in an insolated
plot of ground. For three years ho
has carried on the cultivation, and
now there are said to be from 300 to
400 ardebs in the country, and the
seed is sold in public market. I am
told that as high as £25 and even
£30 per adeb is pud instead of £1.
AU has been bought up, aud the sup
ply is exhausted. Sfipposing that all
these wonderful facts are true—and I
have them from good authority—a
, small revolution in our prospects is at
u Resolved, That we fully-endorse the “Safety ^ 0*717
1. I I’arlSr Fusee,” manufactured by the American.I / / ■
Fusee Company, and earnestly recommend their
general use. We would especially^ suggest to
the citizens of Georgia, nnd to the Formers and
Planters in particular, to supply tliemselycs
with the Safety Match, as their use would un
questionably result in a marked decrease in the
number of tires throughout the State.
Hundreds of testimonials from private families
and others, like the following,can be furnished;
but we have only room for two:
Macon, Ga., Feb. 18, 1876—This is to certify
that I have been using the American Safety
Parlor Fusees in my hotel for the past two
months, during which time I have, by practical
tests, given them a thorough trial, and find then
more than 400 per cent, cheaper than the com
mon friction matches. I find that one-half gross
of the Safety Fusees has lasted me ns long as
three gross of the common matches.
R. DUB, Proprietor Lanier Honse.
-We heartily concur in the statement of Mr.
Dub, as it fully coincides with onr experience
in the use of tne Safety Fusees in onr hotel.
