special rascals, Chamberlain and John

gills—which becomes opaque by
pressure of the finger—and is always
accompanied by liquid, feelid dis
charges of a greenish-brown or brassy
color. Though there have been no
scientific experiments within the
scope of our information, as in the
case of hog cholera, going to prove
beyond controversy the true source
of the disease, it is not improbable
that its main cause would be found in
contagion. That it is contagious,
every one acquainted with the dis
ease will readily concede. Systematic
bad treatment, however, is a most
fruitful source of its diffusion and
perpetuation.
Prevention—As to its prevention,
the weight of the testimony is as foK

little salt in it, is about as good as
could be used—and provide with
plenty of fresh water with a few
drops of carbolic acid in it. Many
things are recommended as appropri
ate medicine to administer, among
which may be mentioned a dose of
liver regulator or a liver pill, a dose
of calomel, a tcaspoonful of whisky

scraps from the kitchen and dinner
tabic, and always, when practicable,
make up their dough with hot or
boiling water. Nothing -futtehs a
chicken «o fast ns meal made into
dough with boiling water and fed
while warm. Give now and then
buttermilk or clabber in their troughs.
Probably the best way to give sul
phur is in buttermilk—a heaping
tablesjioonful to a gallon of milk.
Stale milk after standing too long to
he scrvicablc for the family, is as
good any. In winter, when bugs
and worms are not aocessable, they
should occasionally have meat chop
ped up, and a green patch of grain
or grass should bo convenient for
their depredations. ,
I can endorse the foregoing from
actual experience, having practiced
this course of treatment among my
own chickens for the past year, and
been rewarded with the most grati
fying success, scarcely ever losing
one from any cause, aud none that I
have been satisfied was from cholera;
whereas, formerly, the mortality
amongst them from this cause was so
great as to render their raising both
profitless and disheartening.
If a small piece of the hyposulphite
of soda, (which costs about twenty-
five cents a pound at the drug stores,)
say au ounce to a gallon of water, be
kept in their drinking water, it will
be found very effective iu protecting
chickens from cholera. Where this
article is not couvenient, assafeetida
or tar may be used instead.
After the fowls, however, are at
tacked, I would advise a freo use of
the hatchet—cut off their jie4dg;s^(|
bury them under your grapevines
and appletrecs, or throw them in
the ash box where soon they are cov
ered with ashes, aud iu a few months
become thoroughly decomposed,
flesh, feathers and bones, and you
have a valuable manure for the gar
den. After promptly killing the first
subjects in which you detect un
doubted symptoms of the disease,
renew your precaution and protective
system of treatment, if perhaps you
