exhibition and well worth seeing,
being complete in its every arrange**
ment.. Its;manyEmployees, by their
uniform courtesy and good lTehavior
during their stay in our midst, have
now many friends and much good
will. 'For the past two months, the
menagerie has been visited duly by
large crowds, who were admitted
free of change. Last Monday, a
tremendous degree < of excitement '
was created in this department by
the escape ot the huge and ferocious

hut little! damage, wounding a man

We are at last beginning to reap- .
some* benefit from the enlargement
of otir canal. Our citizens, in con--
junction with some wealthy Bosto-.

be the pioneer mill of that character
in the Southern States. The early
establishment of several large facto

shape. Augusta can only hope to
attain any great degree of prosperity
by her manufacturing interest, pos
sessing as she does so many natural
advantages, which, when taken in
conjunction with the many induce.-
ments which she offers, it will, indeed^,
be passing strange, if she does not
become the “Lowell of the South.”'
Ho additional steps have been-*
taken in regard to the building of*
the Knoxville road. The Convention
for that object will meet next May,,
in our city, when it is hoped that the
matter may be favorably consumated..
Business is exceedingly dull, and
the universal complaint of hard times-
is heard on every side.
Society has been extremely dull'
this season. There have been but.
very few marriages, the matrimonial
market seeming to be in full sympa
thy with the commercial. The event
of the season takes place to-morrow
evening in the shape of a grand Calico
Ball given by the Ladies’ Memorial.
Association, for the benefit of the-
Monumental fund. It promises to be-
a great success, coming as it does
immediately after the lenten season.
Augusta can now boast of one cf
the handsomest and best arranged 1

here, to give you 6ome idea of* the

that the company pays for this build
