BV REV. I. N. CAUUX.
[Wm. A. Jones, foreman of the oompoeine-
room of the New Orleans Times, died last week.
Jnst before his death he became conscious fora
moment, and in that gleam, dwelling upon the
habit of his life, he suddenly exclaimed:
“ The ads are all right, Sherman; lock up the
forms and let’s go to press.”]
Fellow-man, a moment linger,
On the dying printer’s speech:
For it bears a weighty lesson,
Our unheeding hearts to teach.
Day by day thou art composing
What a universe shall read;
Type to typo art ceaseless setting,
' As thou addeit deed to deed.
Ah, how surely life’s fall columns,
When tho hand that set them lies
Fixed in an unbroken stillness,
Their composer advertise.
Soon the forms are locked torever,
Changeless shall ih’ impression be:
Scan thy proofs In time, O printer;
Thou art near eternity.
Are the “ ods” all right composer !
Art tliou standing justified!
Heady now for death and judgment,
Their unfoldings to abide I
So shalt thou, as night advances,
Greet thy’ unstayiug Pressman’s call;
Then await the morn eternal
Publishing thy life to all.

Russia’* Attltode on the Eastern Qaestloa-
Stnrtllns Humor from the Vatican.
That Detroit Police Court.
[By Telegraph to the Journal of Commerce.
London, March 20.—The Times
in a leading article says, it prefers to
believe that Russia sincerely desires
peace. It is towards Turkey that ap
prehensions will be directed by those
who think the prospect will again be
clcytded over. Never within the
memory of man, has there been such
enduring excitement in the Ottoman
capital. We may hope, however, the
Porte still possesses sufficient author
ity to maintain domestic quiet. What
ever may be the state of the Empire,
it has the advantage that the greater
part of the Christian populations have
a profound dread of the threatened
war, and however much they dislike
the Turks, they shrink from the pro
cess of being liberated.
The Pall Mall Gazette, in a leading
article, says: The silent testimony of
events seems to point more and more
direotly to war, or at any rate to the
ever progressing accumulation of the
material of which wars are made.
There is no pause in the military pre
parations on either side. The dis
turbances in Bosnia are spreading,
the Montenegrin envoys have their
answers from the Porte, and a diffi
culty has arisen with Servia about
presenting a firmau, and from all sides
comes grave news of discontent in
the Turkish capital. While diplo
macy thinks only of the necessity of
making concessions to the Czar to
-enable him to restrain his people, it
may suddenly fiud all its calculations
•overthrown by being confronted with
the counter necessity of making con
cessions to the Porte to enable it to
hold its subjects in check.
The News publishes a remarkable
letter from its correspondent at Rome,
containing the following: The ex»
treme section of Ultramontanes are
at this moment enlisting adherents.
Various Jesuits, bearing instructions
from Father Beckx, General of the
-Jesuits, have arrived at the Vatican
from Florence. Father Beckx warm
ly counsels tho project. I have posi
tive assurance that Beckx and his ad
herents promise little short of a
speedy re-establishment of the tern-,
poral power of the. Pope. The
Catholio societies in Austria and
Germany have pledged themselves
to co-operate. One essential feature
of the plan is that the next conclave
is to be held in Rome, so that the
new Pope may be proclaimed a priso
ner like Pius.
^Cardinal Simeoni approves and
supports the plan, and the Pope has
himself written letters to, the Em.
peror of Austria, the King of Bel
gium, President MacMahon and ex-
Queen Isabella. A series of express
instructions have been issued from the
Vatican to avoid collision with the
civil authorities, but at the same time
to keep up the pressure on the
-Catholio powers to obtain their ad<
hesion, and to crusade fora resuscita
tion of the Roman question The
Vatican has obtained lists of the
-volunteers prepared to serve under
the Papal flag, and large sums of
money has already been ae:
France and England.
CASS FOB. WOOL,
[Detroit Free Press.]
John Scofield could remember of
drinking ,nineteen glasses of. lager, a
glass of whisky and another of punch,
but yet, he thought his case didn’t
come under the head of drunkenness.
He had stretched out in the middle
of Woodward avenue for a short nap,
and was trying to fit his back to a
hole :u the pavement when an officer
came along and suggested that such
a position didn’t become him.
“Do you own this town?” in
quired John, through the darkness.
The officer acknowledged that he
didn’t own halfof it, but he insisted
that the prisoner get up. Prisoner
insisted that he wouldn’t. Fight.
True merit always wins. Prisoner
taken down a peg or two. Also taken
to the station.
“ Are you prepared to meet your
doom?’’ inquired the court, as he
looked down upon the man from
Indiana.
“Judge, don’t lay up no grudge
on me,” replied the man. “ I’m a
feller who has had a heap of trouble.
I’ve been married four different times,
aud I’ve just run away from my
fourth wife I’ve had three good
horses die of the bots, lost two cows
by pizen, and everybody and every
thing seems to be down on me.”
“ Well, I don’t see how it helped
your case any to get drunk,” observed
his Honor. .
“ It didn’t help it any—of course,
it didn’t, but I felt mean and low-
spirited, and kinder drifted into it.
I’m about gone up, Judge. I’ve got
palpitation of the heart, rheumatism,
fever and ager, and a lame back, and
I want to get ont in the country aud
peacefully and quietly expire.”
“You do, eh?”
“ Yes, I do. I’ll leave town and
die under some budding tree by the
wayside, and I don’t ask for any
gravestone or obituary notice in the
papers. I’m a used-up man, aud I
want rest.”
“ I’ll let you go,” said the court,
after considering the case. “Take
one of the highways leading to the
interior and make tracks. If you
should be picked up in town within
the next two weeks, you’ll be put
where the price of strawberries
wouldn’t cause you an anxious
thought.”
“ Judge, I believe you. You don’t
look like a man who says one thing
and means another. There is a re«
semblance betweeu you and an uncle
of mine, and—■’?
“ Don’t wait here one second
longer!’’ interrupted the conrt, and
John hurried out. “ ;
When Mr. Gardener was walked
out, it was discovered that he was a
real nice, fat man, with feet a trifle
smaller than Bijah’s, and a bald head.
“Jess so, Judge,” he remarked, as
he came to a halt. “ I own up that
I was overcome for the time being,
but then, it was the first time in
seven years, and you can afford to
let me off.’’ n 1
“You ought to be ashamed to go
staggering around when all Detroit
is excited over the temperance cause,”
said the court.
“Jess so, Judge—I feel as if I
could sink <lown through the floor.
This will be a great and lasting lessou
to me.”
“The officer says you were very
noisy.”
“ Jess so, Judge—don’t doubt his
word in the least, When a man gets
about three-fifths intoxicated, his
great and earnest desire Is to yell
about four times as loud'as a whole
tribe of Indians. Now - that you call
ray attention to it, I remember of,
thinking it was my duty to yell. Jes:
so, Judge, jess so.”
“ You ought , to set a better exam
pie, Mr. Gardener.” /
“ Jess so. I'feel that I had, Judge,
and I will. - I’ll commence this very
hour to set a good example.’*
“You think you can keep sober
after thW, do yohi ?”
“ I know I can. Til doit if I have
to drink thirty gallons of ice water
per day.” • 1
“Well, you can go, and I hope
-you’!! keep your word like a man.”
“I will, Judge. Good-bye—
