THE ATHENS GEORGIAN: APRIL 10, 1877.
CORRESPONDENCE.

several copies of your very estimable
paper, and thinking an occasional
communication front this part ofthe
mundane sphere might be interesting
to some of its many readers, I have
ventured to address you.
Dalton is nestled in the lap of a
beautiful valley almost completely
surrounded by mountains, which rear
their lofty heads above it, and their
long ranges seem spread out like
protecting arms. On the western
side are the John’s mountains, and
just beyond them is Taylor’s Ridge;
while on the cast, the blue Cohuttas
are seen stretching away in the dis
tance as far as the eye can reach
Bet, though Dalton may so justly
1«>-claim to the title of “Mountain
Ci.y," it is by no means inaccessible
or in the “ back woods.” We have
two railways terminating here, while
a third passes directly through.
These, with nearly 4,000 euterprising
citizens, have given rise to the epi
thet “Young Atlanta,” which has
very frequently and appropriately
been applied to our city.
There is quite a spirit of improve-,
ment in our midst, both public and
private. There is constantly some
new building being erected. Dalton
{as is not generally known) was al
most entirely destroyed during the
late struggle for the right. When
the hitter end came and her citizens
returned from the land of their
refuge, how sad must have been-the
scene that was presented to their
eager gaze! Their lands laid waste,
their homes destroyed by the ruthless
hand of war, and their hearts ren-
dered even more desolate on account
of the loved ones who were missing,
for many fathers, husbands, brothers
and sons had fallen in the bloody
strife. But hope, like a lovely flower,
sprung up amid the ashes and ruins,
and exhaling its perfume, acted like
a stimulant and revived their droop
ing spirits. So, with renewed energy
and perseverance, they went to work
with a will, and it is remarkable, the
progress they have made in a few
short years, having rebuilt and beau-,
tilled their homes and caused the
flowers once more to grow and blos
som on the down-trodden lands.
Besides, they have erected eleven
churches, (eight white and three
colored.) two colleges, and other
public buildings. Now, but few
traces remain of the general devasta*
tion. t
There are several points of interest
in and around our city. For one
reared in the low country, the moun
tains possess a never-ending oharm,
with their ever-varying shades of
color. In point of grandeur, 1 think
' a storm in the mountains can only
be surpassed, if at all, by one at sea.
And our sunsets are just lovely—it
seems hardly possible that they can
be excelled by those that illumine an
Italian sky. Our mountains have some
historical renown also. Rocky Face
and Dug Gap—peaks of the John’s
mountains—arc places well remem
bered by our soldiers as scenes of
battles. At the base of these monn
tains are numbers of fine mineral
springs within t,wo or three miles of
the city. The drive out to them is a
delightful one, and very much en<-
joyed by our young folks in the
pleasant summer afternoons.
Now, last, but by no means least,
comes our girls. They are one of
the greatest attractions our city pos
sesses. No where can you find a
merrier, prettier or more iutelligent
< set of girls than we have. Although
quite a number have in the last few
months been led to Hymen’s altar,
our “ Enterprising” editor reports
t hat we have seventy-five of the mar
riageable age still on haud.
But I fear I am trespassing on your
space. More anon.
Elly Lacie.
Ami
>toelWt>!
Well, then, don’t tty end do it;
Yon aay bo able to go round.
Or patiently dig through it.
A fence, you eay, but ne’er a gate
What can you do I you wander;
Jnst scale the wall; mount if yon can,
And, if you can’t, crawl under I
Your W^y le muddy I Wait awile,
Let wind and nnihiiiadty It;
Still, writ not for another rain
To see aome comrade try it.
A river deep, you cannot awim!
No steamer there, yon know it I
Well, if there ia no other way,
Bnild your own boat and row it.
Go down, and yon’U have many a kick,
Go op, and aome will pash yon;
But win your way, and praise will come
From those who tried to crush you.
Don’t hide yenr talent through a fear,
But bravely go and stake it;
Wear out, don’t rest—to reach your goal
Lad, find a way, or make it.
