by tlie half starved and exhausted
filibusters produced its usual results
of demoralization aiid excess on the
part of the liesi gers, who reveled
amid the luxuries of tlie captured
city, and thus becamo insubordinate
and difficult of subjection to the
severe discipline which Henningsen
strove to enforce. InformatioiY’of
this having .lyecii communicated to
to the Nicaraguans in tbo interior
they raised a strong foree, which
marched against Granada, and, .sur
rounding, laid siege to it. It was in
the defense of the town that the
strong military qualities of Henning-
sen were displayed and the valor and
fortitude of his men were brought
-into effective service. The siege was
prolonged for some time, and the
garrison were reduced to the hardest
straits for subsistence and munitions,
but the Nicaraguans made no prog
ress in effecting its reduction, and
■ suffered greatly in every assault and
•esclade.
Finally Walker detached a force
from his army, composed of cavalry*
men under the gallant Captain
Waters, ot Texas, who cut their way
.through the besieging Nicaraguans
.and joined Henningsen, who, thus
reinforced, proceeded to evacuate
fthc exhausted and dilapidated town,
.and with his ragged aud emaciat ed
aaen, forced a passage through the
Nicaraguan army and succeeded in
rejoining Walker’s main *my. We
are not sufficiently familiar with the
(subsequent events to" narrate Hen*
Jiingsec’s further services in the heroic
struggle of Walker, but wo have a
very distinct recollection of the high
estimate Walker placed upon his
merits as a military chief, as his en
thusiastic commendation of the opera
tions around Granada and the de
fense of that town as exploits of groat
brilliancy and skill. Beyond this
service, however, ■ Henningsen , ha<f
little opportunity of making Ids sfcien-
soothingly, “ we’ll just pit ye in the
Hnrbals./fr«< and gin ye dinna lie
quiet we’ll try you sine in Stra’von.”
A gentleman in search of a man to
do some work, met on his way a lady
not as young as she once was, and
asked her: Can you tell me where I £. UTK
can find a man 5” “ No, I cannot,’’ she
replied, “for I have been looking
these tweuty years for on§ myself.”

Sunday Picture.—A touching
sight is a church on Sunday. We
lo tk down the aisles aud see the law*
yer, who has been wrangling in the
courts; the merchant, who has been
watching the fluctuations of the mar

by clanging hammer and grinding
wheel; the maiden, weary with the in
cessant task-work, and the mother,
nearly worn out (jqth the cares of
home. Here they gather, and we see
no longer the busy raau and woman,
but the soul seeking its rest; endeavor*

pinch will ilot be quite so much in one
