came to blows, which was ended by
Hanna telling Morton tiiat if Knefler
was not appointed, lie (Morton)
should -not have a single vote from
this Congressional district in the
next election for United States Sena
tor, and he called on the senator to
mark the prediction and witness the
verification when the time came.
Morton has not been accustomed
to such talk, and after the first mo
ment of rage, began to be alarmed.
He sent for several of his henchmen

fish, but kill the only workers on the

Judge Gresham of the United
States Court, John L>. Howland,
Mayor Gordon, and a few other prom
inent anti-Morton men held a private
jubilee on receipt of the news of
Knefler’s appointment. Gen. Ben
Harrison, though immersed in the
practice of law, fennd time fora quiet

dark and stormy. It was 9 o’clock
when they reached the saloon. Mul

saloon Adams told Jennie Smith that
he intituled to roll Mulharreii and

no tales.” She tried to dissuade him,
but it was useless. They had walked
a square from the saloon when Adams
dealt Mulharrcn two blows with tlic
hummer, crushing his skull. The
soldier fell to the ground dead.
Adams, through some inexplicable
fasiuation, hovered round his victim
until arrested. He was tried for
murder in the first degree at the
December term of the Common
Pleas, found guilty, and sentenced to
be hanged on the 27th ot April. The
Supreme Court granted a stay of pro
eeedings on a writ of error. But as
soon as the Judges had examined the
evidcnce they reaffirmed the decision
of the Court below, fixing the day of
his execution for May 25. Adams
maintained a sullen silence from the

the indolence of their co-occupants.—
