A I)IS VSTttODS FIRE.
HOLDING THE PASS.
RBW YOltK SI or HII Ml ItY TIIK Flit MRS.
New York, September !l.—A fir**
broke out at 9:15, a in., in J. P.
Hale’s piano factory, on West Tliirty-
fifth street, which entirely destroyed
it. It is rumored that ten persons
perished. T|te; flames extended to
the south side of the street, between
Tenth and eleve. th si venues. destroy
ing E. M. Connolly’s barrel factory,
J. Graham & Co.’s silk factory and
several houses adjoining. J. Walk
er’s charcoal factory, on the north
side ofThirty-fifiIt street, was burned.'
A block of frame houses on the west
.side of Tenth iiVetiUP. hoiween Thir-
ty-fifVh and Thirty-sixth streets, are
On fire, and will doubtless be de
stroyed. A steam fire engine was
burned, the firemen beiuir unable to
get it out in • consequence of the in-
tense heat. A strong wind is blow
ing, but the firemen think they have
the flames under control --
Later—A Ilerald bulletin says
about one hundred lives are supposed
to be lost in the firtt '■
The lowest estimate is a million
dollars. It is reported many lives werli
lost but rumors are conflicting. It is
probable some of the workmen in. the
piatiQ factory were unable tb escapo.
Another account says at noon tho
five was under control ibnt. not ex*
tiuguished. About thirty buildings
are supposed to be destroyed and the
loss of life will be very great. There is
uow no hope that a single vestige of
the entire block, bounded by 35th
and 36th streets and 10th ami 11th
avenues will be lull. The sch..ol
bouse on 35th street is already en
tirely deinoli b d, and the tenement
houses on the tour sides of the block
are already entirely in ruin. Every
moment only gives new assurances
lit ^ the result of this lire will be
really appalling. For the first hour
or so hope- were entertained that
the less of life, if any loss of life there
was, would be very small, but as the
'forenoon is advancing it becomes
more and more clea that the loss ol
life will be very great. Among those
wb > are familiar with the factory,
and the mi tuber of bands who are
generally employed there, it is now
estimated that there must he from
75 to 100 bodies buried in the ruins,
and the number of those who may
be injured in the surrounding houses,
from fright and falling walls and
acciden s, cannot now be possib'y
estimated. The tencme..t houses
will have a sad reemd, for the homes
of many hundreds of families are
desolate, and women and children
are around the neighboring streets
perfectly bewildered in their be
reavement.
Later—The fire originated in the
bounding board drying room on the
third floor, where a stove was used
for heating, the steam apparatus not
having yet been put in. A spark
from the slovo is supposed to have
ignited tho dry material close at
hand. Almost instantly that part of
the building was in flames, although,
it is stud, the means of escape were
not sufficient. A number of lives are
lost—perhaps 20, while there were
165 men in the building at the time.
The flames spread so rapidly that
employes who wero above the drying
room wero cut off from the stair
cases. They ran to the roof and to
