THE ATHENS GEORGIAN: SEPTEMBER 11, 1877
Death of*
■ B^r|gham Young. |\vliielj muy eml like ,tlmt ? of Oliver
Hj r j Ui oimvvil iti b^qtioqliiing liis nutlior-
This extraordinary man, whose
name 1ms for the last twenty years been
jo well known throughout Christen
dom by tiie piquant descriptions oil
Ainerioau^ul European tQiRuatg and
1 in consequence of the singularity of
Ithe Mormon religion and institutions
iwhich excited universal curiosity,
lied Thursday of an acute, disease qt
oui 4 o’clock ih win itftcrnJonjSjr at
Kbout a quarter before seven in'he
evening by New Yofk : time. Our
piews of his character are so well
mown th&t wo noetl not rejipat
bn this occasion. There is a cettain
ynd ot forbearance which in civilized
immunities is practised toward the
Ic recent dead, touuded lOfffOn tfiuhl
id* candor than on a tense of bur
inuuou humanity, which we will
>t violate on this occasion, nor on
ly occasion. When a body from
rhich the animating soul has fled
fes pale and cold, awaiting Christian
unchristian burial, “and the
[mourners go about the streets,” even
[generous enemies are disposed to
I withhold the voice of censure and
refrain from wounding the sensibili-
■ ties of the living. In the brief inter*
val between a man's death and his
burial ho is exempted from the at
[tacks which are freely launched
[against a contemporary, and he has
not yet come within the stem juris
diction of history. Far be it from
us to violate this brief truce with a
man’s evil deeds which is established
by the courtesies of civilisation and
the chivalry which disdains to make
war on a corpse. Hrigham Young
has gone to his filial account; he is
beyond the reach of human censure
or approval, and until his lifeless re*
mains ar deposited in his mother
earth wo leave him to the unerring
Judge from whom lie will receive
his deserts,
mourned by the Mormon community,
| and we respect their so now. Even
[tin sudden and lamented death of
! i‘ esident Lincoln did not produce so
deep an impression of grief among
"vervis the decease of Brigham Young
‘vwilf cause throughout the small but
peculiar community which has so
long venerated him as a prophet and
wyed him as a spiritual father.
ie devoted loyalty of a simple and
morant people does no discredit to
ity t.» his son Bil liard. Can Brigham’s
son harangue in the tabernacle with
the controlling skill and pungency of
his djiccasedihther ? Cnnf he put as
strong a ’ snd ou tho bdawof admin*
istrat'on ? Wm his advice bo sought
a»id^tt«kef ;with the same implicit con
fidence ? Will lie have the same easy,
qtim mail il in <^«npiirtyn\:y6 v gr* lrc Aieii
who can preueft, and who tnerciore
posses, onq of, they chief means of in
fluence’in such a community? This
not to J>b expected : itjis contrary
to all' probability. ’ -It is Vnova lilcoly
that after a little time, the son will
be despised, and that the rival ambi
tions of the surviving Mormon leaders
wiiHsplit tips c jJijniunity.into factions.
The decline and fall of Morinonisnt
will probably date from the death ot
Brigham Young, who does not leave
an cqnal nor a socoid in spiritual
craft or administrative energy.—
