THE ATHENS GEORGIAN: NOVEMBER 0, 1877
“ BIG BEN.”
A rl.Ol'K REMARK VBI.K IX SEVERAL 1TAVS.
[Londonderry Journal.]
The clock at the Hoti338 of Parlia
ment has been slopped, and “Big
Ben ” " ill not be heard again until
about the 15th of September. He
sounded his last note at 9 o’clock, but
the clock was not stopped uhtiT IT
o’clock, and the 14 foot minute hand
vccords tlmt time. Once only before
have the hands been slopped. This
happened through a heavy fall of
snow. Though all kinds of rumors
have been circulated iu reference to
tho stoppage of the clock, the cause
is very simple. It is in order to al
low the workmen to erect, a scaffold
iu the clockroom tor the purpose of
repainting and decorating; and while
the repairs are go’ng on the works of
the clock will be cleaned. In a re
cent lecture on the peculiarities of
the Westminster great clock, deliv
ered by Mr. Edmund Beukett Deni
son before the members of the British
Horological Institute, it was stated
that the dial of the eloik was 22 feat
in diameter, the area exactly 400
square feet, and the fall of the weight
474 feet. There are five beiis ^o*
chiming, and the respective weights
of the four smaller hells are four tons,
36 cwt., 80 owt, -and 2Qpcwt.'7Tbe
weight of the hammer Ts 4* cwtf^lt'
ought to he 8 cwt., and until the Dell
cracked the hammer which was in
use did weigh 8 cwt. The winding
i p of the gong part takes ten min
utes, but. the winding up of the strik
ing parts—tiie quarter part and the
hour part—takes five hours each, and
this has to he done twice a week.
The error of the clock amounts to
only one second for 83 days. The
weight ot the pendulum is 680 pounds,
and it can be accelerated a second a
day by putting on an ounce weight.
The figures on the enamel transparent
dial ore two feet in length. The
works ot the clock are in thorough
gomg repair, and the fratno work
hears the following inscription:
“This clock, made in the year of onr
Lord, 1854, by Frederick Dent, of
the Strand and Royal Exchange,
clockmaker to the Queen, from the
design of Edmund Becket Denison,
Q. E.” Just above the clock room is
situated the bell tower, now under-
g ing repairs. In the centre hangs
Big Ben surrounded by the four

TWO SHOPS FOR 18:
One at the old stand in front ot
Messrs. GANN & REAVES,
Ths other on the road to the upper bridge and
opposite
Mr. JOHN Z. COOPE1PS,
the metal, measuring in length 3J
inches and 5 inches in depth, was cut
away to prevent vibration. The
bell’s circumference is exactly 27
feet, and its height 6 feet 6 inches.
In 1852 the astronomer royal declin
ed to have anything to do with the
bells, a< be did not profess to under
stand them. In 1855 Sir R. Hall
(Lord Lianovcr) asked Mr. Beckett
Denison to take a hand in them, and
it was then arranged that he, with
Sir C. Whetstone and the late Rev.
W. T.-ivlor, should be the referees.
The great bell was cast first, but
from some mismanagement it came
out thicker than the pattern and two
tons heavier than was intended, and
it required a clapper twice as heavy
as was reckoned on by analogy to
other bells. The chimes were set to
the followin'! lines:
