THE TWO COUNTRIES.
There is a land of tears and bitter nailing—
A land most like that di ear one Dante knew,'*
Whero wan-faced Niobes, with dark robes
trailing,
In sad procession move, b ow-bound with
rue.
It is a land peopled by witless mortals—
Compared with them the Virgins five were
wise
And it is writ above its gloomy portals’.

Not tlie condensed, nor yet the sorghum

Each dweller bears a grip-sack fat with
money.
Bonds, coupons, stocks, and various othci

No tear doth drown the laughter in their
eyes,
For better luck they’d not donate one damlet;

Death of Mr. A. 1. Skinner.
We regret to announce in tiiis issue
of The Express the death of Mr. A.
A. Skinner, which event occurred at
his residence last Saturday evening
at, 6 o’clock, after ah illness of several
months. The deceased was too well
known in this community for us to
say anything that would add to his
memory, as he became a resident of
this place in 1854, when it was but a
small village, and has been identified
with its business interests for a quar
ter of a century, He was born in
Morgan county March 2Gth, 1834, and
was therefore but a little over 47 years
old when he died. He was a consistent
member of the M, E. church, south,
having joined when he was 12 years
old, and has been a leading member
of this church ever since the war and
was a steward at the time of his
death. He leaves four children, three
boys and one girl, besides other rela
tives, to mourn his loss, his wife hav
ing preceded him some 6 or 7 years.
Asa business man he was known as
strict, honest and attentive; as a
friend, one who could be relied on in
any emergency ; as a neighbor, kind
and obliging; as a father and hus
band, devoted to the interests ol his
loved ones; and he was as strict in
religious matters as in secular. Truly*
it may be said of him that “whatso
ever his hands found to do, he did it
with his might.” He will be missed
in the business, social and religious
world. His remains were interred
in Oak Hill cemetery at 5 o’clock, p.
m., Sunday, services being conduct
ed by his pastor, Hev. A. J. Jarrell,
assisted by Hev. Theo. E. Smith, of
the Presbyterian church, and were
followed by as large a- concourse of
people as was ever assembled in Car
tersville on any similar occasion.
Peace to his ashes. ly
