Democracy in Council.
Tito Democrats of .Marion county
assembled iu the Court House yes
terday, by appointment of Col. E. M.
Butt, Chairman of the Executive
Committee.
The call was made especially for
the Democratic Executive Commit
tee of the county, but on assembling
the house was found to be full of the
representative men from all portions
of the county. The meeting was
therefore resolved into a committee
of the whole, to take into considera
tion the titne and manner of holding
a nominating convention for a mem
ber of the House of Representatives
of the State, Elsewhere, in this is
sue, will bo found the official pro
ceedings of the committee. Perfect
harmony prevailed.
While the committee was out. to
prepare business, Muj. E. W. Miller,
our diiligent and talented Represen

lie answered ti e eall in a handsome
nnd creditable mmm r. IE review
ed his course in the L it tiro, in
respect to the bogus bowls and oth
cr matters of legislation, Maj. Mil
ler lias evidently, by his course in
the Legislature, saved to the State
$600,000, which would have gone in
to the pockets of the bogus bondhol
ders, had he not aided in preventing
it. The return of the committee in
terrupted his remarks.
In presenting the recommendation
of the committee, Hon. B. B. Hinton
made a telling speech against theT
adoption.
Judge W. B. Butt in presenting
ins substitute, made a strong argu
mentative speech.
Mr. M. (}. Brady, followed in fa
vor of the original resolutions, with
decided effect. Mr. Brady gave
sound and incontrovertible reasons
for his position.
Mr. Jack M. Gill next spoke in fa
vor of the committee’s resolution and
advanced some fine points in support
of his side.
Maj. 'Miller replied to these two
gentlemen at length.
Mr. Hedge also spoke in opposi
te the original resole’ion.
Mr. W. O. Steed made a strong,
speech g ving LE reasons for support
ing the subs'itnte for the original re
solutions.
Though the vote was close, everv
body acquiesced patriotically in the
res n’t.

weeks ago, we published a letter from
Ruv. W. 11. Harris, colored, stating
that he did not intend to take a part
in politics, but confine himself solely
to preaching the gospel and elevat

Last week, true to his instincts,
he returned to his vomit and showed
himself to be a negro preaching,
