OF MERIWETHER.
The “banner” counties are named
as follows in the Commonwealth: In
Bulloch, McDuffie, Montgomery,
Webster, Wilkes, Wilkinson, Miller,
not a vote was cast for Jonathan
Norcross for Governor. Irwin, Ra
bun, Jefferson, Dodge, Colombia,
furnished one each. Fulton county,
so far, has cast the largest vote for
Colquitt. Houston comes next.
For Clerk of the House.
The Columbus Times has the fol
lowing good words to say of the pros
pects of our candidate for Clerk of the
next House of Representatives.
“We are glad to notice the
chances of our friend, Judge Wm. B.
Butt, of Marion, for the Clerkship of
the Legislature brightening. There
is no gentleman in the State who
would make a more efficient officer,
and none upon whom tho honors of
the office would set more worthily.
Ife is the only formidable applicant
we havo yet heard of, and no donbt
his success is certain. He is a lawyer
of ability, and is at present Judge of
the Marion County Court. We hope
the members of the Legislature will
honor a noble man and clever gentle
man by electing him.
GENERAL PRESENTMENTS
OF THE GRAND JURY
OcloberTerm of Superior Court
of Marion County.
We the Grand Jury, drawn, sworn
and empanelled lor the October term
of the Superior Court of Marion Coun
ty, beg leave to make these our
General Presentments.
Wo find, by investigation, that all
the market roads in the county arc in
passable condition and that the Com
missioners have fully discharged their
duty, except the commissioners of the
Tazewell District. We find on ex
amination that a bridge, over Bridge
Creek at the old Hollis Mills, (which
is under bonds,) is in bad condition,
would request them to have the same
put in good repair. The bridges are
in good repair throughout the coun
ty, with this exception.
Public Buildings.
The committee appointed to exam
ine the public buildings of the coun
ty, report that the Court nouso is in
good order. AVe find the steps to
the inclosure in bad condition and
recommend new ones. We find the
Jail House in very bad condition and
think it a disgrace to the county.
Official Records.
We find the Books of the Justice
of the Peace and Notaries Public
well kept. Wo also find the books
of the Judge of Ordinary and the
Clerk of the Superior Court, neatly
and correctly kept, reflecting great
credit and prajse upon Hon. Jas. M.
Lowe and Thou. B. Lumpkin.
County Treasury Books.
We havo examined the books of
the County Treasury nnd find them j
neatly and properly kept, and would j
give it as our opinion that tho conn- [
jy should consider herself fortunate
in having at the head of her finance
so worthy an officer. (Full state
ment of books I'ioin last inspection
