.. During a thunder-storm a gentleman
takes a hack down Elysees
toward the Faubourg St. Germain. He
noticed that at every flash of lightning
his driverseriously makes the sign of the
cross, and says: “I observe * that you
cross yourself. You",do well.” “Oh,
yes. It is always well where there are
so many trees, but once we get into the
streets, I don’t give a curse.”— Paris

A RICH SHOEMAKER,
In the taxablesof Brooklyn appears the
name ofa German whose annual payments
for taxes exceeds those of many of the
so-called princely merchants who live on
the heights. He pays taxes yearly upon
real and personal property assessed at
$250,000, but worth, probably, double
that amount. Yet this man works hard
at the bench every *iay, and if he spends
a dollar in recreation for his wife and
children on Sunday he thinks it is a big
thing. He has no help, but wrks for a
few customers, doing all their work and
caiing nothing about any of them. If
they are displeased with his way ol doing
things lie simply says they can take their
work elsewhere, and he sorely tries their
patience by his habit of disappointing
customers as to time. This man collects
his own rents, builds two or three new
houses every year, and from his frugal
habits promises, if his life is long spared,
to be the wealthiest of all Brooklynites.
His yearly income from real estate is not
less than $15,000 per annum, but he re
gards idleness as a sin, and works every
day upon boots and shoes as regularly
as if his bread and butter were in jeop
ardy.
ORIGIN or THE GOD HYMEN.
Danchet, the French poet, tells us re
specting the deification of Hymen that
he was a young man of Athens, obscurely
born, hut extremely handsome. Falling
in love with a lady of distinction, he dis
guised himself in a female habit in order
to get across to her and erjoy the pleas
ure of her company. As he happened to
be one day in his disguise, with
his mistress and her female companions,
celebrating on the eea-shore the
rites of Ceres Eleusina, a gang of pirates
came upon them by surprise and carried
them off. The pirates, having conveyed
them to a distant island, got drunk for
joy and fell asleep. Hymen sized his
opportunity, armed the virgins, and dis
patched the pirates ; after which, leaving
the ladies on the island, he went in haste
to Athens, where he told his adventure
to all the parents, and demanded her he
loved in marriage as a ransom. His re
quest was granted, and so fortunate was
the marriage that the name of Hymen
was ever afterward invoked in all future
nuptials, and in progress of time the
Greeks enrolled him among their gods.
..Commodore Vanderbilt advised
William to always act on his own judg
ment ;he had better be wrong than fol
low another’s counsel. He evidently
agrees with the old Hoosier who gave
this parting advice to bis son: “Ike )
stick to yer own underpinnin’ and not go
bobbin’ round to find somebody else’s
stonewall. You’d alius better, lick the
devil with yer own whip than let the
devil lick you with another man’s.”
We would advise those of our readers
whose buildings or fences require paint
ing, or whose roofs are in need of re
pairs, to send at onoe for pamphlet and
price list of Asbestos Paints, Hoofing,
Roof Paint and Cement. These articles,
which are of unquestioned reliability,
are also the most economical of any in
use lor such purposes. The Centennial
Exposition medal and diploma of merit
have been awarded to the manufacturer,
Mr. H. W. Johns, 87 Maiden Lane, New
York, who within the past twenty years
has built up the most extensive and’ suc
cessful business in this line in the world.
Mr. Johns also manufactures Asbestos
paper, cloth steam pipe, and boiler cover
ings, steam packing, sheathings, etc.,
which are in use in every civilized coun
try.
Fortune Favors the Brave.
In days gone by, when civilization had just
begun to dawn upon the human race, Chance
reigned predominant in the affairs of men.
The Ooddess of Fortune smiled on those as
Chance prescribed. Armies fell, and were
shorn of glory in one day, while wealth and
opulence crowned the victor. Men rose from
the very hannts of poverty, and by a lucky
stroke of the sword gained honor and riches.
But time has wrought a material change. He
no more struggles in blood for wealth, when
a more pacific opportunity afford itself. For
instance, sl2, $6 or $3 gives an equal chance
for the good, round gifts of SIOO,OOO, $50,000,
$25,000, etc., to those who may feel inclined
to invest in a bona fide and legitimate enter
prise like the “Kentucky Cash Distribution
Company,” of Frankfort, Ky. See their ad
vertisement elsewhere.

We often see a large stock of cattle
which do not seem to thrive, and come out
“springpoor,” ail for want of something to
start them in the right direction. One dol
lar’s worth of teheridan’s Cavalry Condition
Powders, given to such a stock occasionally
during the winter, would he worth more than
an extra half ton of hay.

C'riJLLS, CBJJjLS. —Wintersmith’s Tonic ,Sy
rup or improved Chill Cure, is a certain remedy for
every form of Fever and Ague. Its superiority over
all other remedies is in the fast that the cure is a
permanent one— the Chill, when not return.
Unlike Chill remedies generally, it requires no pur
gative to be taken with it; the medicine itself ac
ting gently and agreeably upon the liver and bowels,
effectually removing the cause of the disease, not
merely temporarily checking it as in of
quinine. Sold by all Druggists. J
