LOCAL DEPARTMENT.
FRIDAY MOnNI 'O, NIIVKMII Kll M IMfi.
—A rope walker gave an exhibi
tion of his daring feats on the light
rope, to the citizens of Buena Vista,
on Wednesday evening last.
—“Will the Kads count Hayes in,
contrary to the wishes of three hun
dred thousand popular majority 1" is
the distressing conundrum now pro
pounded to every wayfarer.
—People who expect to get the
Argus, without borrowing it or steal
ing it, must pay for it in advance,
henceforth.
—Much enjoyment was experienced
at the party and candy-pulling, given
by Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Armor, on
Mqpday evening last. We could not
attend, but arc informed (hat all who
went had a good time.* No ono can
have any other sort at Mr.- Armor’s.
Wo arc very sorry indeed to learn
that two or three persons marred the
pleasure of the evening by iudecorous
behaviour.
—Tilden’s elected, but Hayes will
be inauguiated, is tho settled opinion
of many in these parts.
—The colored people held what
they termed a fair in Miller’s Hall,
on Saturday night last. Sometime
during the night, some unknown par
ties rocked the building, striking one
ou the head and probably others. It
was an outrage perpetrated probably
by Radicals, to give their Northern
allies another opportunity to wave
the ensanguined male chimise.
Tlie JLte of Lies,
We clip the following from the At
lanta Republican, a paper devoted
solely to lying and Radicalism:
‘•Buena Vistula.,Nov. 6, 1876.
“Editor Republican:
“We, the Republicans of Marion
county, write to you: paper to inform
the Republicans ot the result of the
election in our county. It passed off
qnielly, and the eo ored people voted
the solid Republican ticket—onlv five
voted the democratic ticket in Buena
Vista. At 12 o’c’ock, m., the Republi
cans were 3,600 ahead. The Demo
crats did everythin!; io prevent the Re
publicans from voting. In the first
place, the) did not open the polls until
20 minutes before 10 o’clock. Next,
J. L. C. Kerr, Janies Walton and Lew
is "'ebb would not allow the Republi
cans I o oast their voles. Manv h-dto
go home will out voting. Notwith
standing, the cottniy lias gone Repub
lican, which it tiev-r did before.”
The leticr had no signature. The
unblushing lying in it is marvelous.
It is dated the day before the e'ection
and claims that the negroes had
{tolled a majority of 3,600 by dinner
time, when there are only about 500
co'ored voters in the county, and only
about 1200 voters in all, botli white
and colored. Messrs. Kerr, Walton
and Webb never prevented a single
legally qualified voter from voting.
Not a single truth appears in the
article. We publish it as a falsehood
curiosity,

The Social Party at Mnj. E. W

Our School Commissioner would

a scholarship in the Slate Agricultur

eonfor upon some young man in Mn

other county will get the benefit of
this scholarship, unless it shall be ac
cepted by some of our own young
men at an early day. The appoint
ment will be given to some young
man, possessing a “fair knowledge
of Arithmetic, English and Geogra

and can arrange for his board. See

—ln selecting a jury to try Thomas
Binion, for embezzlement., in the Fed

novel point was raised. Says Consti

influential citizens were challenged
on (ho ground that they were dis—
qualified, from having participated
in or aided the rebellion. This
point was raised under seotion B‘2o
of the revised statutes. This act
was passed during the war, but sub
sequently repealed. In codifying the
statutes it crept in.”
