A Mistake*
Sometimes men mistake some
things and incautiously do others
wrong. Such, we fear, was tbe case
with uj in our last issue, when we
paid Mr. Codey would not allow his
name used for Senator in the next
election. We learn Mr. Codey has
not said so much, but will be at the
service of his fo low-citizens and
abide their wishes.
Sometßiiisg About Texas.
Trial Farm, Schley Cos., )
October 27th, 1877. f
Mr, Editor : —I have been re
quested by some of your subscribers
to write an article expressing my
views of Texas, and a3 the lime is
drawing near for people to begin to
“bundle up'’ and go west, I think a
few words of introduction to their
new home would be in order.
As I am but an amateur writer
your readers will please be satisfied
with half expressed ideas.
Texas is a very large State, with
many acres of very rich land ; many
wild horses, cows, buffalos, deer and
a great many other animals. These
are its great advantages.
And Texas also has many acres ot
very poor land, with many mediterra
ueous ponds and oceans of stagnant
water that is not good for anything
but to create miasma, raise wild
ducks and toads ; the most change
able climate in the United States and
the worst roads of any country. I
have heard some say that while
crossing the prarios in wet weather,
their wagon wheeis would get clogged
with mud until they could not torn.
These, with a great many other
abomnablo things axe its disadvant
ages.
I have had many to ask where the
poor land was. I refer them to the
Llano or Stake plaines, the worn out
hills, the thousands of acres known
as the “post-oak flat,” which look
rich but will not produce anything,
and to the thousands of acres under
those mediterranean ponds.
A great many ask. “Is it healthy ?”
I answer, no ! It likes a great deal

“Is Ihe society good?” many ask.
Of course tho society is good in some ;
places, and in some it is not -*0 very j
good. 1 have been in setlietnouts I

Stop the Leaks.
Mr. Editor: —'Sir, 1 do not wish to
bore either you or the pubiic, I propose
to offer some thoughts'for the consider
ation, of our people. While I think that
our new Constitution will be oi, great
stride towaids economy, I thi uk there j
are steps that may be taken, by which
the burden of taxa ion may be reduced.
For the sake of brevity, 1 will merely
give an outline of mv seggestiosis, as a
minute detail would make this article
too long. 1 think by changing the law,
so as to let out, the work of collecting
the State and County lax to the lowest
bidder, uud let the bidder give the usual
bond, and to remain at the county sits
only; also, to limit his time to six weeks,
say*from November Ist, to December
15th. By tiie above plan we could
have tho taxes of each county collected
for about $75 on an average. Which
would save, at least, between $40.00 or
$50.00, a great item these limes.
Another great expense might be saved
by simplifying the Superior Court so th
the paities having a cause to be tried,
.should pay the cost thereof, ns in Ju<-
‘bices Court, Our com , are too expen
sive, and tiie man who never has a ea *
in court, lm to pay bis pa.t of o hers 1
law suits.
Another r. fair 1.-.vv, I think, 'b that
.■--Atela if.ip'dres man ■’ V :s< - ■• e
accounts into the ban sot an n.'omev
roc col/ectioim, when they con'd leave
them with tho Clerk or 6t>- ft, Ra j-.r
Justice Gouts, and save th- iiV ... nicy’s
commission.
I, also, think that the number of con;
missioners appointed to revise the jurr
box is inadequate. In place o: three for
ihe county, we ought to have three fo;
each militia district in the county.
I think, also, that a part of our roa i
laws are very unreasonable as tbev no.',
stand.
I would suggest that we abolish the
Justices Court, or p ;y ihe officers about
double what they now arc allowed by
law. By that means we would have a
lull set of good officers in each district.
1 Lope the above hints will come be
fore the eyes of a considerable number
of our fair-minded and thinking men of
the country. Especially our law-nmkcrs
and revisors that are expecting a'seat
the Capital next November.
There are other points of much im
portance, of which I would 1 ike to speak
but will have to close for the present.
