All the wheels etc., being wood and home-made too. The building andmichinery aro put up in nice style and reflects credit upon the builders, Messrs. Anderson & Knowlton. S“ We learn that fifteen bun dred partriges have been sold in Howard, this season—one hun dred the most in any one day. These at an average of 7J cents a piece will aggregate onehundred and twelve dollars and fifty cents. 9* Large supplies of guano are being secured by the farmers. ‘Hard times and worse coming!” tar Mrs l)r. Hall, has opened a sohool at the sohnnl house neat the railroad three miles east ol Howard. SSr Prof, Dixon's school is in a pros]nuns condition, numbering nineteen students. F" White Water Sabbath school will meet tiro first Sumufh in April tor reorganization. Bain. Heaay There vh ■ tremendous rain fall on Saturday night and Sun day last. We guess the river is very high. This is the result of good schools and wise merchants. Tho Cry U Still They Come, It is a daughter this time. We congrstola'e yon, Mend Bine>, and hope the little stranger will live to be a belle aaoag the young folks end s joy to her denting parents. PUBLIC OPINION. A PRINTER WANTED. Court! Courti Court! Wo wonder if our people will ■ever stop having "cnlleileoorts.” There is scarcely a day that we do not have some kind of a court. Sometimes it is a Justice of the Peace that has a court, then it is ■ Hotary Public aud Exiflcio J, P. that has a court, and then the two lost are united into one, and then they aro called a county Criminal Court, and when none of theee are sitting, the lawyers will fall back on tho Mayor, and have him hunt some poor lellow that has been violating ordinances; and if all these fail, why they mauago to have Jndge Buss, hold a court, to prove wills, ami so we go. I.et us have peace without the interposi tion of a court. An Important Case. Wo learn that the orse of the Slute, vs P. G. Shephard, dismissed this morning. Mr. Hester, the prosecutor, having abandoned the case. Hester bad taken out a l’eaco Warrant against Shephard, about the time his fa ther-in-law, Smith; took out one against W. R. Shephard for mur- dering his daughter. We trust this is the lastol this unfortunate affair. Hot that we would he mis understood ascenturing Mr. Smith or Mr. .Hester either for their conduot in this matter, for neither did anything we suppose, hut their duty in the matter, hut they are all neighbors and we hope will be friends in the future. The result of the lato trial of W. R. Shepiml.nhargeil with kill ing hii. wile in January laet seems to have been contrary to the ex pectation of a great many, and the decision of the presding Jus tice dissented from. As we did not hear the evidence, we are only able to speak from what we gathered from reliable sources outside the court room. That it was not an act of self de struction on the part of the wife is generally agreed on, and while there are some circumstances that would orirainate the accused, there are many that bear equal weight in his favor, and would fully justify the conclusion that there was not evidence sufficient to bind him over. The pust life of the accus ed, no doubt adds in a great meas ure to the weight of public opinion against him n w. And before fully making up. our minds in this mutter we should cleansu our hearts as we do our eyes when we look at a dis tunt object. The eye if it bepre- tinotnred with any color is vitiated' in its discerning.” Tho fervor of the prosecutor is not commeudable in the Judge. To be earnest in the discovery of truth, is honest aud noble, .hut when it is browght as near as may lie to light, our judgment should he carefully considered. As said by a former presiding Judge of this Circuit, 'The law makes it the duty of the presiding Judge, in a case of mur der, to be very tender with the accused,” and it is the glory of cur Constitution and laws, that' there shall he reasonable evidence which must be “publicly demon strated by clear legal, manifest evidence, so that nothing dark, nothing oblique, nothing authori tative, nothing insidious shall work to tho detriment of the per son on trial.” “Tho laws must be satisfied before they aro incurr ed, anil legal guilt must be estab lished by legal proof.” The Magistrate trying this case was elected to the office because the people wanted the plaee filled by a man who was acquainted with the law, ami the fact of his having made Criminal law a spec iality, arid is able to reach a de cision without invoking the aid of bystanders, is udditiuiual reason to satisfy us with tl.« decision,un less it is clearly out ot the pale of justice. Our Judges who grow out of the legal class, to their honor, ho it said, generally indicate a leaning to- the higher spirit os contained in all law, and by their opinions and decisions, iean plainly to what is human, if not Christ-like. A good situation is now offered to a steady, honest boy, of good hubits, between tho a l ge of twelve and eighleeu, who wishes to be come useffil in life, and has had some experience at type setting, can do well by applying at this office, at once. We do net want a tramp, they have been numbered by scores passing too and from, like a breeze of the air, that canst not tell from “whence they cometh or whither they goeth.” They are acurse to themselves and a disgrace to society, The loading KdmatiouiU l*-pr; .i i j; Araaii- ca—lhe ljftrgi-.il. aud AbL-tit in ill-.
