The Superior Court lms been in session in this county for t wo or three weeks, and I presume that the trial of a murderer which lias just ended in t!ii« county, with sur» rounding circumstances, will bo the most interesting to your readers. The trial of (ills Johnson for the murder of nnegro. Daniel Alford, which oc curred in August 1S7<», and which has occupied the attention ofthoSupjrior Court of Floyd county for the. past weok, was concluded on Wudnerday, When the jury, alter a days delibera tion, returned a verdict of “Guilty..’ Tlio trial of this etiso lmi attracted considerable attention, both on ac count of the atrocity of the murder, Which was entirely unprovoked, and tho fact that tlio prisoner is a person ofdesporato character, and reckless habits, whose long career of crime has shocked tho whole community; and caused the people to turn their ejes upon him as they would a Hon turned loose to roam over tho land, and de vour whomsoever ho meets. Tho facts of the murder ot which Johnson has just been convicted are briefly as follows. In August of last year the defondeut, with other men, ratio up to King's Ferry ou the Coosa river, near Home, and ordered tho negro, Who was on tho opposite bank to bring tlio ferry boat over, and while the ne gro was making preparation to carry it across, Johnson tired at him with a shot gun, loaded with buckshot, be cause lie did not eotno fast enough, and killed him iustnnly. No oppro brious or insulting words wore utter ed by the negro, lie merely said tlml ho would bring tho boat us soon as lie could. Thu ease win called and tlio prisoner pled not guilty, because ho was iu«nno at the time of tho killing! 6cver.il panels of jurors were exhaust* od before a jury was gotten. 130 ju rors were sworn as to their competen cy on this case, and 100 out of that number expressed themselves us be ing bias or prejudice for or against *tf.c defendant, and it is presumed against him. 15’were rejected by the tBflLMior, and only three by tho Ktatc. Tnreo days were occupied in examin- wiinimta. The in’honrr.ilul not deny the killing, hut introduced testimony to show Ids insanity, which was completely rebutted by the State. •!C wlmesses were examined. Alter tho evidence concluded, the Solicitor opened with a-short speech, and was followed by two able lawyers for de fendant one of whom spoke three hours* The fSolieltor spoke six and half hours in eomdusion, mid while npeaking, the defendant became en raged, and with several onlli< in open court, made two or three cflbrts to get to him, but was prevented by the guard, lie fore the trial was over the prisoner wvs, by his request, sent back to jail. This man lms been con sidered of a desperate chara tcr for •uoveral years, and a very rude and mischevious boy, one always ready to enter into any diflleulties or dovll- liiuntJVoin his childhood, ilo very much inclined to light and get up disputes between others. Ills lath or was shot two years ago by some otic in ambush, and ever since ho lms carried his gun, and has killed several persons, and •committed various crim inal offences, A few days-ago several man wore floating down the Chattooga river, in an adjoining county to this, in a boat and while going along, they discover ed protruding out) oftho water, the legs and boots, of a man, and when they came near it they drew it out, and found it to he tho body of n man, with his right car cut off, abdomen and breast cut open, and a rope with a largo rock tied to the end, fastened around the neck. The body was re cognized si3 one Hunt, that lived sev eral miles from there, a few days be fore this occurrence, Mr. Weathers, of Chattooga county, Io«d a horse and pursued the thief for several miles, and put out a reward of .‘1*25,00 for the horse. In tho meantime ho arrested two negroes, who said that G us Joint- eon had stolen tho horse, and carried it oh', for ho had not then been arrest-’ o I for murder. Out! or two days nl’ tor tlio negroes were taken up, (Jus Johnson brought the horse to Mr. Weather, and demanded tho reward, and said that ho had captured the thief, and at tlio same timo she wed a hat with shot liolr.3 in it, and the right car of r. man. Ho told Mr. 57. liodiad.killod the thief and threw him in the creek, which run into tlio river. V - ' / Mr. Hunt was a good man and it is believed by tho people that Johnson stole the horse and killed this man to hide his own theft, and for tho reward. About this time, while uffhis guard, ho was arrested for tho murdor of this negro, for which ho has boon convltod. A groit many fearful crimes have boon report ed against this man, liat I w<ll not mentiou .my more, as t have writ ton iu >**o thau I in- ten led when I coiuiumiead. Ho committed a crlino against a negro man, tho first part nf Wt year, and a special plea ot insanity, put in for his defense, and was sent to the lunatic asvhun, but w w there only a few days whoa the Superintendent sent him away, saying that ho was no crazy man Ho has been so,mimed to bo linng th« 15th of June, 1877.
