A fine rain visited our town last night, which was much needed, An interesting debate was held in the court house on last Fri day night, between Dr. J, P. Moye, Maj. J. H. Hlolsey and W. P, Edwards. After many strong arguments on both sides, the de lusion was rendered in f&ver of Dr, Moye. We congratulate him in his success. We return thanks to Mr. N, A Cooper of Reynolds, for a nice bucket of the finest plums we have Seen this season. They were of the Chickesaw variety. Watermelons are now plentiful in Butler; three Very fine loads were brough to town last Friday. The average price of which was one pent per pound. We can but return our many thanks to the Executive Commit tee of the Board ot Trustees, for a cordial invitation to attend the annual commencement of Monroe Female College, which fakes place on Wednesday, the tenth inst. Very sorry it will not be conven ient lor us to attend. Sudden Death. OUr town was greatly shocked on yesterday morning by the sad intelligence of the death Of Mr. James M. Jones, who died at his residence in this place on Monday morning of appaplexy. On Sun day evening previous, Mr, Jones was in his usual health up to about the hour of ten o’clock. He lingered through the night and died about six o’clock A. m. Thus has passed away one of our best and most useful citizens An hon orable, upright and high-toned geutleman. He had hosts of warm true-hearted friends, and so far as we know, had not a single enemy. His family has the sym- paty of the entire community in this sad dispensation of Provi dence, We learn that the deceas ed will be buried in this town this morning at nine o’clock with Ma sonic honors, of which fraternity he was an honored member.
