THE BUTLER HERALD. W. N. MEN NS. Editor and Publisher* Bvimciuption Paid $1.00. Pkb Annum. TUESDAY OCTOBER 29th 1878, DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE EOU CONGRESS. HON. PHILIP COOK OF SCMTEIt, FROM THE THIRD DISTRICT fashioned and prepared for God's kingdom on earth. This sketch would be quite Im perfect If we did not meution a few of the prominent characteris tics of our brother, and chief among them was his plomptneas. He learned in early life the important lesson, that duty deferred, was duty not performed. Hence, in bis Christian duties, as well a, in bis secular pursuits, he had a time in which to do everything, and tried to do everything at the proper time. He was no laggard; never behind. When tho hoar for preach ing arrived, if he was to preach, he commenced. If olhere were to preach, and did not arrive and commence in time, they were at a discount with our brother. Another characteristic was; his fidelity to his friends. He was one of the few men, that could and would, say to his friend, when iu error; “brother, you are wroug His was the part of the true friend, Tribute ot Respect. Below we publish the preamble and resolutions of the committee appointed on last Sabbath relative to the life and character of Rev, Wyatt Bbooks : Your committee feel that they are not adequate to the perform ance of the task imposed by the res olutions appointing them to make, ^'h^brother ot his fault; a report, on the life, character and th „ m6elvo , alone . Wyatt Bbooks. It we possesied the ability, (which we do not pretend to claim) of properly portraying the character of sur brother,in life, and in death, it would require more time than we have at our command, and would take up more space than the records of . our Sabbath school would afford. We must therefore content ourselves with a compara tively brief notice, of the life and character of this truly good and useful man, We do not claim for our brother absolute purity, In the common acceptation of the term, (tor none are thus perfect,) but we do claim for him, Christian perfection, iu a most emanent degree. If there was one, of all of earth's children, that was more com pletely conse crated to the service of his Master, or that strove more ardently and constantly to perform the duties which that service imposed than did Wyatt Bbooks, it has not been onr good fortune to know such an one. He consecrated himself to that service in boyhood days, and iu youth, manhood, and old age he was equally faithful. In the pursuit of his worldly avocations, he was energetic; industrious and untiring. Few men equaled, and none surpassed him in this res pect. Whatever he found for his hands to do, be did it with all his might; but never, during his long life, did he allow his worldly pur suits to intervene betweenbimand his duty He sought first the kingdom ot God and His righteousness in ev ery thing; and trusted the prom ise, “that in due timu, all needful things would be added.” It can truly be said of him, that there were few “like him in the earth a perfect and an upright man; one that teaied God, and eschewed evil,” His whole life, was one of supreme devotion to Christian principle and duty. His polar star, was his foible. By its light attd teachings he wbb fed, by its warnings he was admonished, by it3 promises he was ^cheered, anti in the Christian’s faith he died. Died I no, this is not the word. He will never die, he only rests from his labours and his works follow him. Brother Bbooks was not a learn ed Stan m a literary point of view —his education was limited; but in all the Christian graces, he was polished after the samilitude of a palace. ' His devotion to the cause of Sab hath schools, wsb constant and un tiring. He recognizid the fact, and acted on it; that the Sabbath school was the camp of instruction, where the young were trained for future useiulnct-s—the nursery of Alv. ebutvh, whore* material was Another characteristic was; his devotion to his church,(the Meth odist,) which was only surpassed by his devotion to his Master, He believed, and acted on his belief, that the Methodist church, was above all others, iu its ductrines, and polity, more in accord with the teachings of the foible, than any other. His broad Catholic views, how ever, never allowed him toiliscouut the piety, or question the integri ty, of members of other churches. Whenever and wherever he found one that was faithful in the dis charge of duty, whether of his own church or some other,he hail ed him as a brother, and bid him Gods’ speed. With this brief p ortrature of the character ot our brother while in life, it would be needless to say muolt about bis death. There could be but one end to such a life, and thateud peace. What a legacy he has left, not only to his family but to all who Knew him, Who ol us that knew him are not the better for tho- ao- quriDtance; and who, so callous that they will not extend sympa thy and condolence to the bereav ed family. He served his day and generation well, and has gone to reap the reward of the just. The journey was a short one. The chamber where the good man meets his fate, is honored above the common walks of life, quite on the verge of heaven.” Therefore Resolved 1 That in the death of Bev. Wyatt Brooks, the Methodist church has lost one of its most exemplary members— the Sabbath school a zealous sup porter—the community one of its brightest lights—the wife a dear husband—tho children and grand children • kind aud indulgent la ther. Resolved 2nd. Thai we hereby tender to the stricken family, onr sincere sympathy and condolence in this, their hour of bereavement, Resolved 3rd. That this preamble and these resolutions be spread upon the minitsB of the 8abbath school, and a copy of the eame he furnished the family of the deceas ed by the Secretary of this school aud that a copy also be furnished the editor of the Butler Herald with the request that he publish the sae»e. 8evolved 4th. That as a further testimonial of respect, that the stand and bible be draped in mourning for the epaoe of thirty days. Respectfully submitted, W. 8, Wallace, J,T, Gray, R. Montfort, J. M. Bateman, W.
