A Curiosity.
A curiosity was discovered quite
early this morning on our streets
hy the passers by—there being a
large bench placed on top of the
house, over the door of Hr. W. G.
Bateman's store,by unknown par
ties during Honday night. We
venture to say there were not less
than fifty discharges made with
fire-arms during the night—all for
fnu.
national Sergleal Institute.
One of the staff of this old and
notable Institute will visit Butler

purpose of giving all persons in
any way afflicted, an opportunity
of an examination. The exam!
nation will be free, and all persons

ited to one day.
A Sure Cure for Colic.
As so many horses and cattle
are so frequently attacked with
this distressing disease, we make
mention of an instance which oc
curred in our town a few days
ago. A very fine steer, belong
ing to York Baldwin, col., having
been fed very highly on pease the
day before, was attacked With a
Very severe spell of colic, and was
believedby every one present would
have died in a few moments had it
Rot been for a prescription given
hy Hr. A. 8. Bates, in which be
directed to be given the ox, one
pint of kerosene oil. After sever'
al other remedies had been applied
and proved unsuccessful, the dar-
kie concluded he would try the ker
osene as there seemed to be no hope
for the suffering animal, and death
seemed close at hand. The rem
edy of Mr. Bates was given and in
less than ten minutes the animal
was rdiaved of all pain and was
up walking about calling for its
mats. The same remedy may be
applied to all animals suffering
with this complaint, and will
doubtless prove equally successful.
Accidentally Shot.
A little negro girl was accdent-
ally shot one day last week by a
negro man who was out in the
Woods near the house shooting a
ohicken. The gun with which the
shooting was done was a Kentucky
rifle, and loaded with a handful
of pease and two back-shot. There
being a skirt of woods between the
man and the child he did not dis
cover her being at the distance Of
fifty yards. Thus the shot was
fired, the ohioken killed, and a
ball passed through the woods
striking the child in the groin,
inflicting quite a sever* wound-
Dr. Smith probed the wound, but
as he thought best tl.» ball was
not extracted

Ihrough a Bridge.
Augusta, Ga., Oct., I9th—An
engine and five freight cart on the
Port Royal Road, were precipita
ted into the Savannah River, four
miles from here last night. An
entire span of the bridge gave way
and the engineer, with two oth.
er men, fell thirty feet with the
locomotive, which was nearly cov
ered with water. The men, how
ever, broke the glass in the cab,
crawled through the opening,and
were rescued from the debries un
hurt. Damage to bridge and train
$10,000,
Mr, Gillison gave a graphic ac
count of the catastrophe to the
Augusta Evening Sentinel report
er, He said that the train had
been slackened up, with its heavy
load of wood, ami the engine had
entered the bridge, exhausting
steam and going at a’ slow pace.
He was standing on the lett haud
side of the oab, when all at once
the bridge was felt to be giving
away and before the sensatioh
could be appreciated they were at
the bottom of the river, and amid
the crash ot timber, the rushing
ing of water and escape of steam
a terrible fate seemed impending,
Once at the bottom, the sensation
of being crushed was over, leaving
Mr. Gillison, with the engineer
and fireman,to a dread realization
of being drowned in the cab, With
water above, below, and on every
side. Raising himself however,
ith his left hand to the top of the
cab, he found that he could keep
his mouth above water and at once
grabbed the engineer, who had
been stunned by a piece of timber
and raised him to a similar posi
tion. Seeing the light through
the window and hearing raps up
on the paDe by the fireman, who
had scrambled out over the tender
Mr. Gillison climbed through,
still dragging the engineer after
him. Once upon the top, the
work of ascending the wreck by
running up the inclined plane of
the train was an easy one.

Another New Discovery,
After several years of a very good-
natured, loose way of doing business,
I discover, that 1 owe more persons,
than 1 don’t owe, and that my credit
ors Are signifying that 1 must settle,
or hunt new friends. And as l am
too poor to move, aud furthermore
discovert that 1 am brought face to
face with the fact, "that something
must bo did/' 1 therefore make an
appeal to those who owe me,—espec
ially to those who have tor several
years remained in arrears* I feel filly
groatful for the pktl'onage of the dear
public, and If we could afi now square
up,I feel that 1 should be glad enough
to treat all round* and then like a
clever fellow go along and have the
fun of the credit business, all over
again.
1 hope this Will not be taken as a
joke, and I intend to so apply myself
to the subject, as that no suob mis
takes will be made.
So after dog-days, and camp-meet
ings are over, 1 shall have an ear for
response* JOHN WALKER.
