of Mr.Dennis regarding liin ti mtl)-
A Shooting Ailraj nt Hawkins-
villa.
The following sad oocurance
Which taken place on the gist of
October, we copy from the Haw-
kinaville Dispatch. Mr. Dennis,
having once lived in tlutler, haR
many friends and relatives here
who feel deeply interested and re
gret the sad affair :
Hawkinsville was considerably
excited on Wednesday evening
lost over the report that Mr. P. J.
Hodge, a young lawyer of Haw-
kineviile,atid Mr,Thomas B. Den
nis, a planter, had been engaged
in a ehooting affray two tnilesfrmn
town, and that Mr, Dennis was
dangerously wounded.
As it is our desire to give an im
partial atid fair statement of the
dificulty and its origin, it may he
proper for us to slate the causes
that led to the hostile meeting.
Mr. Hodge, as attorney for a cer
tain party, held a distress warrant
against Mr.Dennis, and an officer
had been sent to the plantation of
Mr. Dennis to look after the inter'
est of Mr. Hodge’s client.
On Wednesday evening Mr
Dennis came to Hawkinsville and,
going to the office of Mr. H edge,
denounced him for a failure to
keep his word of promise, and for
lack of other qualities pessessed
hy gentlemen. Mr, Hodge being
unarmed, and thinking that Mr.
Dennis had his weapons, waived
a difficulty in his office, but slated
that he would meet Mr Dennis
anywhere and at any time and set
tle the trouble.
Mr. Den
sition, and
should meet outside ol town that
evening on the road leading to Mr
Dennis’ plantation.
Mr. Hodge armed himself with
his pistol, mounted his horse, and
rode into the country, some three
or four miles, and was returning
to Hawkinsville when he fell in
company with Mr. James E Laid-
ler, who had been out to the place
of Mr. John Scarborough to see
him on business.
When within about two miles of
Hawkinsville—in the lane beyond
the residence of Hon. Ruell W.
Anderson—Mr. Dennis and Mr.
Hodge ohsi rved each other. Mr.
Dennis was in the buggy, accom
panied by a small colored boy.
When within about thirty steps of
each other, botli men made simul
taneous movement—Mr. Dennis
getting out of his buggy and Mr.
H ndgedii-monntiog from his horse.
Mr. Ladlier felt the embarrass
ment of the situation,and remark
ing that he was a disinterested
party, rode on past Mr. Dennis
and stepped.
Mr. Hodge as he dismounted,
gave his horse a jerk hy the reins,
throwing the animal to the rear,
and advanced. Mr. Dennie made
n similar movement, giving the
lines In tiie cnlurid boy. Mr.
Hodge's words were :
“How will you have it ?’’
“With pistols l" was tiie reply
of Mr. Dennis.
By tlnr time the men had ap-
pioached within a lew yards ol
each other, and drew their pistols
begun firing. It is supposed that
M r. Dennis was wounded by the
th ird shot
les, amt the morning after the dlt-
iculty he expressed himself all be
ing able to return homo, which he
dtu.
Dr. Smith, who visited him on
Saturday, reported, him getting
aloug favorably. The hall has
not yet bee extracted, and its
whereabouts is unknown. Mr.
Dennis’ physiciaus think that his
pain is caused mostly from the
breakiug of oue of his ribs by the
pistol ball.
There was no lack of courage
displaped on eigher side in the
reincouriter. The combatants ap
peared perfectly cool. Mr haul
ier witnessed the whole affasr,and
after the shooting had ceasel,stat
ed to Mr. Dennis that he(baidler)
was only a spectator—that when
he left town he was in entile igno
rance of any impending trouble
between the partius.
One hall stiuek Mr. Hodge’s
horse in the neck wheu lie dashed
across the road.
It is unfortunate that, brave and
sensible men should resort to pis
tols to settle their difficulties.
The general opinion of the com
munity is that the trouble between
Messrs.aHodge and Deriuisshould
sthp where it is. No investiga
tion is necessary.
P. S.—Dr. Colding visited Mr.
Eennis on Monday last, anil from
him we learn that Mr. Dennis'
symptoms, nt that time, were less
favorable for his recovery. He
had considerable fever and was
spitting blond.
