THE BUfLER HERALD. W/' N. UENN8. Gillttr and Piibll.no r. SuhChu-tion l'niua $1.00. Pm Anhuh TUESDAY NOVEMBER ltfth 1S7H, The liegislnture nud the Kail* roods. The present generation has seen th'e beginning of the railroad sys tem of transportation. The lat ter part ol the year 1830 witness ed the opening of the first railroad in England, under the name of the Manchester and Liverpool Kail- road. It was built under the di rection 'of the celebrated Stephen son, who was also the inventor of the locomotive. The first public excursion was honored with the presence of the Duke of Welling ton and the chief officers of the British Government, Stephensou, himself acted as engineer. The next experiment was io this country, on the Baltimore und Ohio Railroad, in which Peter Cooper, of New York City, built an engine at his own expense, and with it ran a race with a horse. The horse won on account of some accident to the machinery of the locomotive. The entire weight, of the locomotive did not exceed one toa. In the early part of the year 1831, the locomotivo was put in operation on the South Carolina Railroad, and from that time un til the present, the construction of railroads has been carried on with astonishing rapidity. At present there are nearly 80,000 miles of railway in the United States. W1 en we consider the vast amount of money that has been expended in constructing and equipping the different roads, and the centralization of that capital in the hands of comparatively few men, it will be seen that they wield great, and in a certain sense unlimited power. Nor have the railroads hesitated to use it; and that too, oftentimes, in an unjust and insolent manner. In some ports ot the country, so grievous have been the burdens laid on the public that the law-making power basbern compelled to interpose— notably in one or more of the North-weBtern States, In our own State such complaint has been made against the rail roads. Indeed, this feeling has goue to an extent that will doubt remedy with an uuflinohing band. We do not wish u war uu the rail- roada, but we do desire that the public shall he protected from on erous burdens and unjust discrim inations, if, as is alleged, such evils exist. Talbot County Items. Eroni the RcalTrsn. Mr. J. H. Martin, ot Talbotton, gathered form one-fourth of an acre fifty bushels ot fine yam pota toes. Mr. H. C. The Industrial Society of Hart’s District, which holds its monthly meetings at Mount Ziou, is prov ing a great success. Its members are alive to the true interestofag riculture, and will another year institute suudry reforms in their firm econemy. Giiain Sowing,—An uuusually large area of both wheat and oats is being seeded down this Fall. We note as a reform in the old methods that more atlentinu is be ing paid to putting the grain un der. The ground is being careful ly prepaied, iu sofu« cases sub soiled, cotton seed and other ma nures are being liberally applied, and the seed grain in every iu stance been carefully selected. So with such preparations, and a greatly enlarged aeerage, we may expect plentiful harvests auu.lier year. Have Toil the buckeye?
