THE BUTLER HERALD. W. N. BENNS. Editor mid Publiser. SUBMUFTIOM PUGI $1.00. Pi* AXKUM. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 90th 1S7S, Lease or the Ma ou mid Bruns wick . Uutlro.nl. We notice that onr representa tive, Hon. J.D.Mitchell, has intro duced a bill authorising the Gov ernor to lease out the Macon and Brunswick raiload, at a sum not less than fifty thousand dollars per annum. Ought the bill to be come law ? As a general rule we are op posed to the State owning or controlling railroads or engaging in any business others than that which strictly and legitimately pertains to it. Experience has demonstrated that whenever the State in any other business than that of enacting and administering laws, that it works badly almost without exception. Especially is this true of railroads. They are xnn in the interest ot whatever party chance to be ia power, and henoe tends to the corrupting of publio morals, and almost always entail more or less ou the people. Moreover, the time, if it ever ex isted, has passed away, in which this State would be justified in building railroads. Unfortunately however, some years ago, views entirely differnt from those we have intimated ac tuated our legislators, and the State endorsed bonds of tbis rail road to the amount ot over two million dollars. The result was what might have been foreeen;the _ road failed to pay the interest on its bonds and the South was forced to seize it for her own protection For a long time the road failed tu pay more t tan the expense of run ning it, the present year however, it has paid in to the State forty or fifty thousand dollars, and there is a good prospect that for the fu ture its net earnings will amount to more than this. Inasmuch therefore as the fifty tb sand dol lars at which it is proposed to lease the road will not -.y half the annual interest on the amount of which the State is lia le on ac count of this road, we think it would be better for the State to run this road one year longer or require seventy live or a hundred thousand dollars for its rental. We have little doubt that in this time the road could be leased for fifty per cent more than it can at present.- It is thought by some that the move to lease this road is made in the interest of the Central road; we express no opinion on this point further than to say that we are confident Dr. Mitchell believes be is working for the interest of Georgia, “first, last, aad all the time.’’ Besider, if the Central road will pay more ter the lease of the road than any other person, we see no good reason why it should not be leased to that cor poration. Dri J.D. Mitchell. This gentleman makes a watch, ful and otherwise faithful repre sentative. He is always at his post, and seems to be jealous of, and against any and all measures that'would seem to militate against his constituents and the whole people of Georgia. He is a whole souled -an and makes friends of all. with whom he comes in con- tapt... Taylor could not send a more failblul representative, aud in honoring him the'vbfers of hi« county honor themselves, May his shadow never grow less and his statute never he lowered. Gkkin. 1 he Butler Literary Society. We understand that at a meet lng of some of the prominent cit- zens of onr town on Monday even ing last, a society was organised with the above name. The object of the soc : ety is to ad vance tho culture of its members. To this end,the leading magazines and reviews will be subscribed for aud furnished the members. By this arrangement a member of the society by the payment ot five dol lars annually, will have access to all the standard magazines and reviews published in England and this country. In our judgment this is an important move and will be of untold benefit to our town; and we hope that all our people who can possibly afford it will en rol their names as members of the society, as no person will be allow- ed the privilige of reading the re views and magazines which come to the society except the families of those who are members. Any person, lady or gentleman can join by giving their names and five dollars tu the Secretary. Anoth er important feature of the society is, that its members will meet at least once every two weeks for the discussion of what they have rvad, in particular, and of literary top ics in general. Stoned to Death. Two negroes engaged in a diffi culty on the place Mr. Mahoue. at Bellevue, and began to use rocks pretty freely, throwing at each oth er. An elderly colored woman step ped in between them as a peace maker, when a missile was thrown by one of the boys at the other, which missed its mark and struek the woman a fearful blow on the head, fracturing her skull and ma king a frightful Wound. She lin gered until Tuesday night aud died.—Talbotton Standard. , Bare You the Buckeye T It is a well established fact, that Tabler’s Buckeye Pile Ointment will eurc, if usud according to directions.
