As viewed from the third story of
the Telegraph building it seemed a sea
of fire, the ridges and valleys of the
roofs adding to the deception, uml giv
ing the appearance of waves of bril
liant water bursting into cixjfts of lurid
*ed and caps of leaden foufo.
The entire roofing of tho.^doe.k was
of shingles with no walls in the interi
or of the building, and the firing ele
ment spread with amazing rapidity
All of the engines were at worn .but it
was apparent that the best that
bo done was to save the surrounding
buildings. :
These throe stores are total losses,!
and tlio whole loss to the city will not
lie less than one hundred thousand 1
dollars. Of this amount there is probl
ably an insurance of sixty thousand.
The origin of the fire was ’evidently
the work of an incendiary, urftlie wood
«n shop which was first fired was
burning at the back and whf-ro there
was no possibility of its catching from
any accidental cause.
Busy hands went to work saving
what could bo removed, but not half
of the stocks were recovered except
from Sclmll’s.
Hunt, Rankin it Lamar, think the)
will # HG»roo!y‘suve $3,000 in a decent
condition. They did not save half of
the stqck on the first floor and nothing
from the up stairs, nor the basement.
They have a stock of $15,000, and are
insured with nearly every office in the
city, for about $28,000. C. H. Rogers
ik Co.’s loss cannot be estimated. They
are probably Well insured.
Among the other losers are Messrs.
Bacon ifc Rutherford, R. W. Patterson,
Col. J. P. Fort and Dr. W. F. Holt,
whoso ofllcek were in the second story
of the burned building. Dr. Holt’s
office desk was saved, and some of the
books and desks of the other gentlemen.
The department worked with unre
mitting heroism, every company com

Their efforts, together with a breeze
which was blowing from tlio northeast
prevented a spread of the conflagra
