TUKMDAT, 3EPTEMB«B 9th 1879.
Death of BUre* Tenieon.
The news of the death of (hit most
estimable lady which took place at the
residence of Mr. W. Q. Bateman, on
laet Saturday night was not unexpect
ed to any one of our community, but
the love and great esteem with which
she was held by all who knew her has
oast a gloom over this community. But
while we are bereft of a pure and shin
ing light, and the many friends and
dear relatives abroad will sorrow over
the loss of this pure one, we have a
blessed assurance that she has reaped a
rewai-d with the finally faithful above.
No lady has ever died in Butler who
had more friends or for whom the
community felt a deeper sympathy than
did Mrs. Bettie Tenison, being one of
Christian purity. Her disease was one
of long standing and much complica
ted, but she bore her afflictions with
out a murmur.or complaint,and passed
away amid the triumph of a living
faith. In early life she joined the
Methodist church, and in this belief
her whole heart was consecrated to the
One who gave it its first love.
Her remains were interred in our
cemetery on Sunday afternoon at 4
o’clock.
We take special pride in calling the
attention of our readers to the adver-
tisemet of J. W. Lipsey & Co., which
appears in this issue of our paper.
Energy and careful attention to the
minutest part of everything in their
line, oombined with fair dealing, has
built up a trade they may justly feel
proud of. Great care and pains have
been taken in selecting the stock now
arriving, and we predict a better trade
than they have ever had. Not satisfi
ed with going to headquarters of the
United States for such goods .as they
handle, they weut to the manufacturers
and bought from first hands; this of
itself will enable them to offer superior
inducements to all who favor them with
a call.

Butler cjinp-Meeting.
On last Sunday morning in company
with Mr. E. C. Pierce and Col, W. P.
Edwards, we visited Butler camp-meet
ing, where we found an immense crowd
in attendance. Our team was a swift
one,and on arriving about 9 1-2 o’clock
we at once proceeded to the stand, and
notwithstanding the immense audience
which had assembled under the arbor to
listen to the elegant discourse by Rev.
B. F. Breedlove, of Taibotton,we wero
tendered a comforlable seat by our
estimable friend Mr. J. G. McCants.
In casting our eye over the congrega
tion, our attention was greatly attract
ed at the many familiar facts, of both
relatives and friends, of whom we had
so long and earnestly desired to meet,
(hat we could scarcely give this sermon
its due respect. At the close of this
exercise we had the pleasure of shak
ing hands with those whom we had so
long associated and enjoy their pres
ence a short while, until the regulai
11 o’clock service began. At this hour
Ixi v. Dr. Bass, of Macon, preached an
elegant sermtn on the Prodigal Son f
which was much enjoyed by all.
About 1 o’clock a most cordial invi<
tation was extended us by our worthy
citizen, Mr. R. Montfort, to })artake of
his hospitalities of the hour. Well,
knowing tha^no better place could l>e
found, we proceeded to join in the
bounteful feast. Cloths being spread
upon the ground, great basket of every
thug that heart could wish or the most
tlelieate apetite could endure,was made
free to all. Mr. W. J. F. Mitchell,
also spreading his cloth near by, not
feat than two hundred hungry and
thirsty souls sprrounded these bounte
f«\ spots. To say there was enough
for All, we might truthfully say that
many more could have been bountefu^
ft*.
Wandering back to the tents, we

Talbot and elsewhere,in singtog,talking,
etc., until the 3 o’clock service began
At this hour, Rev. W. A. Singleton,
of Buena Vista, was introduced to the

We will not attempt a full discription of
the sermon, but must say that the halls

Talbotton has a number of visi

Mr. Whit McCrary of Geneva
has seven pointer pups, which he
haa sold at (10 each.
The corn crop between Baldwin-

The rust is injuring the cotton
crop to a considerable extent If
the present crop weie to bring 60

scarcely be repeid.
The road Commissioners have
condensed a number of sections, on
account of insufficient work.
The bridge across Richland
creek, on the road fromPrattsburg
to Tbomaston will Boon be, and in
fact is now unsafe.
There was an entertainment at
Mr. J. W. Parker's, atPrattsburg

that the obildren of Mrs. Sarah RogetB,(wbo

time since found in the woods a nest of three
young squirrels and brought them home.
There waa in the bouse a cat that had ioet
her kittens; uow the strange part of the sto
ry is,that the cat instead of eating the yonng
squirrels, took them under her care and pro
tection, and ia rearing them up juat
would if they were her own. The old cat
feeds them and will fight for them,
informant says, quicker than she did tor her
kittens, aud will run to the box containing
them (two of them now, oue having died)
upon the slightest cry of the little squirrels.
This strange sight may be seen any day at
the house of Mrs. Rogers, by all who shooae
to go. Unde Timothy Bloodworth has been

squirrels are of the tpecibs known

Improvements.
We are pleased to state, and it is a
Act, that our town at the present time
shows more life, energy and prosperity,
than at any time since the war. In fact
the farmers also, throughout the coun
ty,wear better faces and are more pros
perous than ever before, notwithstand
ing the crops are not so good as of
former years.
Our school, the pride of this com
munity is in a flourishing condition.
Although repairs are much needed to
the building and grouuds, our worthy
Mayor and Aldermen have pel footed
arrangements l»y which every necessa
ry improvement will be made f *r the
benefit of tliia school and to adxance
the interest of its cause.
Our merchants are enterprising,
trifty and persevering. Messrs. J. W.
Lipsey & Co., having purchased the
Holbrook building, are now completing
oue of the most attractive and elegant
buildings, to be found iu this part of
the State, iu fact, the surrounding cit.-»
ies cannot present a more atti active
two story building. Mr. Lipsey de
serves much credit for his energy and
perseverance, to aid in building up
our town. Mr. J. U Wallace, having
recently returned from New York, in
forms us he hat purchased the largest
and most complete stock of goods ever
brought to our market, not at a high
price but at prices to suit the times
and the wants of the people,
Mr. W.T. Montfort, having reoently
had his building repainted by Mr. J.
R. Brinkley, aud otherwise improved,
adds greatly to that portion of the town
as the building presents a handsome
appearance. Mr. Montfort is a gentle
man of much energy aud deserves to
succeed.
We learn also of several other mer
chants beautifying their buildings with
a substantial coat of paint, which will
greatly improve the appearance of our
town in a few weeks.
But, while we notice the energies of
our worthy merchants, the improve*
raents of Butler do not cease with
them alone. Almost every citizen
seems to be filled with zeal and enter
prise to improve his personal property
in order to enhance its value. Among
the new buildings which are now in
progress of erection, is that of Rev. J.
R. Respess, Rev. John Rowe, and oth*.
era. We learn also of several families
from a distance moving to Butler, pro
vided suitable residents can be se
cured. Would it nolle well for some
enterprising citizen who has the laud
to build on, to erect a few neat dwell
ings for the purpose of renting to oth
ers? We think a better investment
could not be made.
Butler, situated exactly halfway dis
tance between Macon and Columbus,
directly located on the 8. W. Railroa^
with its pure water and healthy loca
tion, we see no reason why it should
not become one of the largest and most
important towns iu this section of the
State. Let our citizens continue
their good work and their energies
will be crowned with success.
Our stock was purchased from manufacturers and first hands,
thus enabling us to offer our customers and those who have, not
traded with us heretofore, bargains superior to any other bouse.
ThiB Department is presided over by B. H. GRIFFITH and I.
A. WALLACE, both experienced Salesmen, who are ever ready to
