Steam Cotton Oin and Screw.
We had the ploasure of witnessing
tho successful starting of the new en
gine aud cotton gin belonging to Messrs
K. and W, T. Muutfort of this town.
The engine works well and seems to
us to be all that the most exacting
could ask. As to the gin, it is delight
ful to look at the work it performs.
We have carefully examinod the cot
ton after passing through the gin and
can say without hesitation that we
never saw prettier lint from the same
quality of cotton. We are told by Mr.
Montfort that if necessary, he can gin
a bale of cotton every hour. We are
further informed that a bale of cotton
can be packed in three minutes;
course the packing is done by steam.
Messrs. Mention are entitled to
great ureuit for the successful comple
tion of this enterprise, and we trust
they will meet with much success.
We must not omit to mention that the
work was supervised by our townsman
Mr. John Anderson, to whom much
credit is due fur the placing ol the nta-
ehinery and its successful operation.

The Show.
A respectable audience was out
last night to witness the sleight ot
hand performance ol Prof. Blukely.
Some of these performances bor
dered seemingly on the miraculous.
For instance, a pair of handcuffs
belonging to the Sheriff' of this
county, with a patent lock, were
securely locked on the wrists of
the Pioftssor by a gentleman in
the audience and the key tetained
by bim, These handcuff's, the
the pet termer took off and put them
on oue wrist the geutlemau all the
while retaining the key.
The crowd appeared to be well
pleased nitn the performance which
lasted about two hours and was
enlivened by a number ot “sells”
perpetrated by the Professor on
persons in the audience; the crowd
being particularly delighted with
, the rnanuer in which our slim

The Camp Meeting.
Mkssrs. Kditohs:—The recent camp
meeting waa quite a success aud doubt
less considerable good was accomplish
ed. I regretted that so few of our But
ler people were there, aud hope that
the few who attended were buuetitted.
1 do hope that several Butler families
will tent next year. Oue of our breth
ren stated to-day that he would be oue
of live to build new tcuts for next year,
if Providence permit. Now surely
there are four others;—there are many
advantages iu a camp meeting that we
do uot realize at a protracted meeting.
First, we get more preachers together;
secondly, we gut more working mem
bers together—more “righteous” to
pray “pervont, effectual prayers, which
availeth much.”
Thirdly, business is turned loose for
the time, and the whole attention can
be iixed upon religion.
Fourthly, the services at the stand
iu the woods, etc., occupy the whole
time, and the minds of tho people art
kept on the subject of reliuiou so con
stantly that many are brought to de
cision before their attention uud
thoughts are diverted by business and
other unfavorable circumstances at
home.
For these and some other reason, 1
i decidedly in favor of camp meet
ings
Now, I know that there are some
objections, but so there are to all re
ligious meetings that are protracted;
and, indeed, to the church itself But
while it gives rise to some objections
that are peculiar to it, yet I am pur-
suaded that the advantages of the camp
meeting are so many more and so fai
superior to a common protracted meet
ing that the objections sink into in
significance. I am sorry that a class
of people alteqd the camp ineetftig, who
go to have a “good time;" and who
seem to think that they have a perfect
right to spunge upon a few persons

Stomach Bitters is pre-eminently popular.
Wherever civilization plant* its foot on this
continent, thither the great tonic soon finds
its way. Nor is this surprising, for it is tue
medicine of all others best adapted to the
wants of tho Western euiigraut, be he miner
or agriculturist. It is an incomparable
edv for tbe diseases to which he is most
ject, aud which are liable to be brought on by
a change of cliuinte, hardship, exposure, un
accustomed nir and diet, and uiiasmntio at-
nvwphere and water. Arooug these are dis
orders of tho stomach and bowels, rneumatic
ailments, and malarious fevers, for ^ll of
which Hustetter's Stom ach Bitters is a oer-
tain specific. A course of the Bitters before
defatting for the new field of labor, or on

the evils tor which it is such a siuguhu letu-

tive iu tenting. And while they par
take of the teuters hospitalities, really
some intent upon defeating tho very
purpose for which they tent by divert
ing the minds of others from the sub
ject of religion, with all sorts of chat
at the tents, aud even at the stand.
How well-hred people—gentlemen aud
ladies can do as some of them do, 1
u’fc understand. Is it genteel ?
By the way, Messrs. Editors, did
you ever notice one who . other
wise had the appearance of being a
young lady, flouuciug around a tent,
talking as if she was empresss of all
she surveyed, aud seeking to attraot
the attention of young men—seeming
to select the time to make herself most
conspicuous to approach the arbor, and
then come talking and laughing so loud
as to draw the attention of tbe congre
gation from the preacher (by reason of
the fact that it was disorderly conduct,)
and then sit dowu in the midst of the
congregation to whisper and gigle (thus
interrupting those who went to listen
to the preacher,) uud sit bolt upright
during prayer to gaze around,(perhaps
at young men) and laugh at the serious
minded; oh! did you uot pity the silly
creature, aud ftigh while you prayed.
Oh, would some power a gift to give us,
To see ourselves uh other see us.
How strange that Home of our girls,
daughtqjso#'pious parents, can gel
their to act in this way! Pass
ing strange that they do uot have more
respect fonAhfcir fathers aud mothers,
if they 4o Nit for themselveB. Strange
indeed, thawladies can spunge on tent
