There has never been since the
first, settlement of our tovfo a great
er want of dwellings than is at
the preseht time manifested,for.the
accommodation of our own c ; tizens
and those who are constantly mov
ing to our town. Every suitnh'e
dwi’ling has been occupied, and yet
there an* some families unprovided

Among the mnuy acts of pro-
gii-ss now in our midst, we arc
ph'iin d to state that Mr. Geo.
Adams, of Americus, an experi
enced hak^r, is now located in our
li.wn for the puipo-o of furnishing
to our people fresh hreiuls of all de
scriptions,candies, etc. Mr. Adams
comes highly recommended as a
first class baker, of long experience
in the business, and guarantees to
give perfect satisfaction The ad
vantages of a good baker is greatly
beneficial to every community and
we trust therefore that our people
will g've him such a warm support
a » to enable him to make his bad
ness a permanent one in our midst.

All singers and their “sisters and
their cosins and their aunts” will
sing this charming new song writ
ten by I. Edward Orchard and just
published by our great Southern
Music House. Why ? Because
not one new song out of a thous
and is so pleasing and its popular
ity is only a question of time.—
In sentiment, melody and harmo
ny, it satisfies both singer and
'hearer and once heard will he call
ed for over and over again. For
soprano or tenor. Easy accompa
niment. Elegant title page. Ask
your music deah r for it or send 40

he made with the writers of tin*
North. As it is we regard the
Sunny South ns the equal, if not
the supeiior of the New York
Ledger.' Give to it one-half the
support that the Ledger has and it
would be infinitely the superior of
that paper.
Take another Iflstanee—the
North American Review, and the
Southern Methodist Quarterly Re
view. The first has age, money
and a large corps of experienced
writers to make it able and attrac
tive. The latter, twelve months
ago bad neither mouey nor reputa
tion to aid it in its stiuggle for ex-
istauce; yet, notwithstanding all
this, we venture the assertion that
the South rn periodical weu’d not
sutler in acompnriso”. with itf jvr
erf'ul Northern comped it or. Let
our people give to it a support suf
ficient to enable its publishers to
pay writers of a ability a fair price
for their cnntr bution*, and the
time will speedily arrive when it
will be the equal, perhaps the su
perior of any Northern periodiosl.
Let our people resolve to support
and encourage their own writers,
and then we will not be compelled
to go to the North for our liter
ature and school b ioks. Then, and
not' until then will the South com
mand the respect, and occupy the
position in which she iscnlitbd in
the world of literature, science and
art. Let us all. with thn begin
ning of another year take a “new
departure” in this matter and re
solve that we will keep our money
ut home, and extend a liberal and
unfaltering suppoit to the newspa
pers and periodicals that are now
struggling f»r existudeo in the
South.

Death »/' Mr. John F. Leads.
It is with feelings of sine re re

of Mr. John F. Lewis, after
illness of uea ly two weeks. The
sad ev* nt franspiivd at his room
in the Dyewes House, in Hawkiio-

was stricken with pneumonia, and
from Ih lir t doubts were express
'd as to the result, hut a slight im
provement in his condition was
manifested, when tli hopes of hh
family and friends were revived
A relapse occurtd, however and it
became apparent that the divaded
m ssenger of d alh had made his
inexorable demand. Surrounded
by his wife and children, he quiet
ly and peacefully breathed his last
before the stroke of midnight on
the 2D tli
Wo do not know the exact age
of Mr. Lewis, but be was probably
in his fifty-second year. Ho was
one of the wealthiest citizens in
this section of the State. He was
largely interested in mercantile
business in IlawkiiiRville, Montezu
ma and Gum Creek, and was the
l ead of tin*, hanking bouse of John
F Lewis & Son, of Montezuma,
and senior of the hanking house ot
Lewis, Leonard & Co., ol H*»wk-
insville.
In business Mr. L^wis was ne-
commodati-nga 1 d strictly honorable
and to these traits lx* was lurgilv
indebted for his wealth. In H»eu!
life be was afaciuhle, courtreous
and kind. His d nth is gioii’ly
