We are indebted to Representa tive Cook for valuable public doc uments including bound volumesof the Congressional Record. We appreciate these favors and the General will please accept our thanks. Wp return thanks to Mr. George Adnuis, for several very fine loves of bread whloh wo received fresh from his Oven. \Ve rccommcud this bread to be equal if not superior to any baked by the most experienced bakers of any pity. Only a trial will suilice to prove the correctness of this statement. Mr. Adams i« now fully prepared to fur nish our people with large quantities of this excellent bread daily, which if properly managed will prove a vast amount of assistance to our people, iu the way of cooking. Serious Accident. We learn that a serious accident oc curred to Mr. William Hogg, of this county on yesterday‘rinoruing. Mr. Hogg for some time past has been in the employ of Mr. R. M. Garrett, and while out ia the woods engaged iu hauling wood, the mules which he was driving became suddenly frighteued and running at full tqieod threw Mr # H-, between the wheels of the wagon, knocking him perfectly seuselesa for the moment and cutting several severe gashes in his head. Mr. Hogg was afterwards picked up and carried to the home of Mr. Garrett, where he re ceived proper attention. His wounds are not considered very dangeroua and it is earnestly hoped that be will soon . -'wecover. in the Asylum. John A. Bellara, of Schley coun ty, who attempted to commit sui cide several weeks since, was taken to the Lunatic Asylum, by Dr. W. J. Bears, on Tuesday 30th of De cember, having been adjudged insane. Dr. Sears returned home on Thursday the 1st inst., stating that be had hut little trouble on the route with the unfortunate man.— iSumter Republican. Drowned at Eort Gaines. From passengers up on the Holt yesterday, we learn of a most unfo»-.u- uate and sad death by drowning of a lad about twelve yeaisofage named John Lewis. The circumstance as we learn, was a terrible stroke to the pa rents of the boy and the community exceedingly regret the untimely death. The particulars are about these: When the boat arrived at the lan ding las* Sunday, he iu coinou^ with many others, went 041 hoard the* boat as they generally do on all such occasions. Iu coming from ths boat and while on the gang plunk, he inistMid his footiug and fell into the awift current be* >w. Tlu> current is very swift at 'thsx ;»bi •, and before uiy assistance oou|u be ‘r£ii<ibtYd him ho Wtth carried under the water and drowned. Up to tl\p time the. Holt Njpawjed there* WedquIUay tfie bt^ly had Hoard of County Commissioners This body met in the court-house on Tuesday morning last and having taken the oath of office, the Board was organized by the election of Hon. J. D. Mitchell to the position of Chair man and O. M. Colbert to that of Chairman pro. tern- All the members were present with the exception of Jno. Searcy Esq. from the Carsonvillo District; we understand however that he will be present and enter upon his duties at the next meeting of the board, which will be to-day Of course the Board transacts very little business at its first meeting, most of the time, being taken up in getting ready for future work. The members of the Board are able and honest and being all of them men of first rato business capacities we doubt not their administrations will be entirely satisfactory to our people. The Board was invited to a free dinner at the “Bullock House” and their action on the occasion showed that its members were not so puffed up with their new honors as to be insensi ble to the deligets of a generous and well filled board. Long may the geni al host live to cater to the wants of a hungry world, and long tnuy the Com missioners live to enjoy his hospitality and teBt the good things with which he has the ju Jgoment always to supply his guests. NOTICE! NOTICE!! XMPOHTAN T TO MILL MEN. Success attained at last in the wuy ofwater wheels. Mr. Brown retires permanently from the hotel business in Macon. Gin House Darned. Last Monday morning, Ciipt. S. G. Davenport, of the 28th district of 8uropter couuty, had his gin-house, with ten bales of cotton, two thousand bushels of cotton seed, and two gins, one of which was entirely new, destroy ed by tire. It was the work of an in cendiary. No insurance. Loss twelve hundred dollara.—Sumter Republican. National Surgical Institute. One of the staff of this old and no table Institute will visit Butler Ga. CaseB of Deformities and Chronic Diseases will be examined—such as Club Feet, Diseases of the Hip, Spine, and joints, Paralysis, piles, Fistula, Catarrh, Female uud private diseases, “The enemy my lord” replied Hales “will die in the treuches if your lordship thinks best; still when you have done all that you cau do, if all is lost the blame will attach to those who have failed to aid in the hour of need.'* “I would not wMingly censure anyone, uor do 1; still I can't un derstand why Cliotou has not come to my assistance. If aid ia delay ed beyond to-morrow it will be too late. I will not eudanger the lives ot'mep when 1 know no good will be accomplished by it.'* ‘•Sir\Henry is my friend” said Hales but I must say that it seems to me ho could have render ed you assistance bef .re this time. We know he received yc*ur dispatches asfrhg for aid.” God’s will be* done” returned Cornwallis. “? had hoped loDg before this to b*vt* been somewhat instrumental in restoring his Maj- ty’s authority in these provinces; but if I am forced to surrender, as now seems probable, it will give the wliigs at home stub an advan tage that I fear my friend Lord North will be driven fruin office and tlreu coin* s the independence of America and all our blood will have been shed in raiu. How true th‘ saying man proposes but God disposes.” The party tod** on iu silence; Cornwallis appeared to be over whelmed with sorrow, and ns he he had been a kind commander, all respected his grief. As Clinton sent foward no re inforcements Cornwallis was com pelled to surrender which he did on the 19th day of October 1781. It is unnecessary lor us to go iDto she details of thilTsurrunder— an event which was the virtual closing of a seven year's war,— What particularly concerns us is th *t by the* terms of surrender offi ce! s and soldiers were permitt'd to retain their baggage without search. Hales was thus allowed to keep his property which ho had stolen in the South and which amounted to a very large sum.— Cornwallis was permitted to re tain a sloop of war which wa-* to lie allowed to depart for New York without sciutany.Hales and a num ber of tones who had beoome ex tremely odious to the people in that section went on board this ves sel and sailed for New York.— Thus the former had fortune to get away safely with all his ill- gotten gains; aud thus, while Britain was losing the brightest jewel of h : s crown, Hales was building up and securing a large fortune at the expense and injury of the character of his cruelty. [TO BE CONTINUED ] Great Prospects for Some Sum ter County Citizens. Mr. J. H.
