COLUMBUS, QA.
Ks'Prrslilont Davis ami Ue«.
ilimeiili li. Johnston.
Our readers are doubtleas^ware
of the state of feeling eslltiug be
tween these two distinguished men
'l'heir differinces date hack, at the
least,to the time when Gen. Johns
ton was relieved from the com
mand of the Confederate army
around Atlanta.
At the time Gen. Johnston was
uperseded by Hood, thousands of I
people in the Confederacy believed
that President I>avis had made a j
mistake, the result of which would
be fatal and irreparable. Many,
even of the sincere friends of Pres
ident Davis were of opinion, that
if Atlaata could be saved at all,
and Gen. Sherman prevented from
reaching the coast,that Gen.Johns
ton was the man to do it. The re
moval of Gen. Johnston from his
command caused many of our |>eo-
jrl- to loose all hope that the cou-
test in which we were theu engag d,
would ever terminate in favor of
the South.
Now that the war is over and
we can look at the matter in a culm
and reasonable manner, it is per
fectly clear that the South could
not have succeeded under the lead
of Gen. Johnston or any other man,
when once the North had deter
mined we should not leave the
Union. This being true perhaps
it would have been better for the
fame of General Johnstoa had the
matter of his removal been allowed
to rest where public opinion, at
the time it occurred, had as
signed it. Perhaps it is also true,
that although President Davis had
beeu unduly censured for his ac
tion in the matter, it would nev
euheless have been better for him
tiVbrve abstained front again agi
fating the question.
Prom spy point of view there
fore in which the matter can be re
garded by the friends of either Gen.
Johnston or President Davis, it is
to be regretted that the latter felt
called upou to review the question
in the history of the war which he
has recently written. But while
this is true, it is uone the less true
tnat the munuer in which General
Johnston has answered the stric
tures of Mr. Davis, will do the as
sault more harm than the assailed. I
It seems fr m newspaper reports,
that Gen. Johnston has recently
in an interview with the ub.qui-
tons newspaper reporter, charged
that wlitsi Davis uud his cubiuet
lef Richiuoud, the Confederate
President had under his control, six
or eighi millions of dollais in gold
aud silver, the dispositon of which
\ - sum has never been accounted tor
Now wtrile it will be necessary
to, aud Mr. Davis doubtless will,
answer this charge, we are satisfied
that not one in ten of our people
will ever believe that Jeiferson Da
vis ever u ed a cent ot money that
he had no right to use.. This ophi
te u is founded tu the filet, ill it no
man before General Johnston, not
even the bitterest Norther foe, b *s
ever made ttie least charge against
th-peisotiul integrity of Mr.Davis.
I.: the next place the fact is noto-
• ioiis that Mr. Davis was financial
ly ruined by the results ot the war:
and that since its close In- lias beeu
dependent upon ti.esa aiies of va-
vi us positions which his iriends
have from time to time obtained for
him, and that he is now depend
ent on profits from the sale of the
book which he has written. True
he had a legacy left him by a Mis
sissippi lady; bat up to a recent
date he had real-zed nothing In m
it.
Upon the whole it will require
more than the bare charge of Gen.
Johnston to convince the penph
of the South that Mr Davis is guilty.
of any act that would smirch lr
personal honor; nnd if Gen. Johns
ton shall *ai! to support his charge
with clear ani 1 anangieHchable tis-
timony, our peoVe will visit up a
h ‘ta the c n-ure that he involns
k on Mr. Davit We repeat then -
fore, that we gently deplore th
.of this subject;
