CRIMES OB THE D.AD MEN. :
Lucien Manuel, Hyde Brewing-
ton, ana Hiram J acobs were execu
ted lor the murder of Alexander
Peterson, who was a merchant and
express agent at Ally. He was one
of the wealthiest and most influen
tial citizens of Montgomery coun
ty. The shooting occurred on July
20th, about 9 o’clock at night The
negroes had’entered into a conspi
racy to rob Mr, Peterson. He had
remained'in his store ' after-the ar
rival of the night express train and
avt \
was preparing to leave for home
when the negroes came.;' into the
store. Lucien Manuel- stepped foi-
ward,- while the others remained at
the door. Manuel walked; to the
counter, facing Mr Peterson, and
asked if-he had any money in the.
as will demonstrate abroad our 1 8 tpre, The merchant replied that
wisdom and good faith, thus plac
ing upon a firm foundation our
credit among the nations of the
earth. '
I want our financial conditions
and the laws relating to onr cur
rency so safe and reassuring- that
those who have money will spend
and invest it in business and -new
enterprises instead of hoarding
it.
You cannot cure fright by call
ing it foolish and unreasonable, and
you cannot prevent the frightened
man from hoarding his money. I
want good, sound and stable mon
ey, and a condition of confidence
that will keep it in use. Within
.the limits of what I have written,
I am a friend of silver, but I be“
lieve its proper place in our. cur
rency can only be fixed by a read
justment of our currency legisla
tion and the inauguration of a con-
sistant and comprehensive financi
al scheme. I think such a thing
can only he entered upon profit
ably and hopefully after the repeal
of the law; which is charged with
all our financial woes. In the. pres
ent state of the public mind
this law cannot be built upon, nor
patched in such a way as to re
lieve the situation. I am, there
fore, opposed to the free and un
limited coinage of silver by this
country alone and independently
and I am in favor of the immedi
ate and unconditional repeal
of the purchasing clause of the bo-
called Sherman law.
I confess I am astonished by the
opposition in the senate to such
piompt action as would relieve the
present unfortunate situation. My
daily prayer is that the delay oc
casioned by such opposition may
not be the cause of plunging the
country into deeper depression than
it has yet known and that the
demcratic party may not be justly
held responsible for such a catas
trophe, Yours very truly,
Grover Cleveland.

other one, , which was fatal in its

During the interval between the

a few day8 after Mr. Peterson’s

was captured day after the others.
Hiram Jacobs was ca ngh through
the agency of a barber, who was
hiB cousin. The barber noticed that
there* was soot and grease on his
face and mentioned the fact to
some citizens. His arrest was fol
lowed' by his partners in the crime.
Shortly after the imprisonment of
the men all of them confessed the
killing of Peterson On the receipt
of the arrest of Jacobs in Bulloch
county the others told the whole
story. The trial of the negroes was
held at Mfc Yernon, in the first
week in September before Judge

The Editor’s Dan.
Most of men think that news
paper men are persistent dnnners,
, By the way of comparison, let us
suppose a farmer raises one thous
and bushels ot wheat a-y ear, and
sells to one thousand persons in all
partB of the country, the great por
tion of them saying: “I will harld
you a dollar in a short time.” The
farmer does not want to be small,
and says all right Soon the one
thousand bushels are gone but he
has nothing to show for it and ho
then realizes that he has fooled-
away his crop, and its yalne is due
him in a thousand little driblets,
consequently he is seriously embar
rassed in his business, because hie
debtors, each owing him one dollar,
treat it as a small matter and think
it would not help much. Continue
this kind of business year in and
year out as a publisher does,’ how
long would he stand it? A mo
ment’s thought has cause for j
sisteut dunning. When you rj
this think how much you owejthe

tlanta Constitution.
omas Jefferson feared that
tional banking system would
ild up favored money rings that
uld absolutely control the coun-
try. -
As far back as 1S03 lie wrote to
Albert Gallati:
“This institution (natioal bankt)
is one of the most deadly hostility
existing against the principles and
form of Government. * * * *
Ought we then to give further
growth to i n-institution so power
ful, so hostile? * * * * Now,
while we are strong, it is the great
est duty we owe to the safety of
our constitution to bring this pow
erful enemy to a perfect subordi
nation nnder its authorities. The
first measure w° Q ld bo to reduce,
them to an equal tooting with oth
er banks, as to the favors-of the
government.”
Mr. Jefferson’s views have con
tinued to-receive the endorsement
of thefiemocratic party. The na
tional democratic convention of
1856 had the following plank in its
platform:
“That congress has no power to
charter a national bank; that we
believe such an institution one of
deadly hostrlitity to th6 best inter-
ests of this country, dangerous to
our republican Institutions and t he
liberties of the people, and calcu
lated to place the business of the
country within the control of a con
centrated money power, and above
the laws and will of the people,
and the results of democratic leg
islation in this and all other finan
cial measures upon which issues
have b6en made between the two
political parties of the county,
have demonstrated to candid and
political men of all parties their
soundness, safety and utility in all
business persnits.”
Our latest platform is on the
same line in its recommendation to
repeal, the 10 per cent tax on state
banks. This would carry out Jef
ferson’ s idea of reducing the na
tional banks to an equal footing
with the other banks.
It is well to turn hack to the old
democratic doctrine on this ques
tion.
The remedy is to carry out the
Chicago platform and re-establish
tate banks.

strange weakness in my hack and around my

ing to their universal conclusion, there is no

say, it continues its insidious progress until
it reaches a vital point and the sulferer dies.
Such was my prospect. I had been doctoring
a year and a half steadily, but with no par
ticular benefit, when I saw an advertisement
of Dr Miles* Restorative Nervine, procured a
’bottle aud began using it. Marvelous as .it
may seem, but a few days had passed beiora-
everybitof that creepy feeling had :c.t me,
